Let Your Head Control Your Heart
What would you do if you are announced that the one you love has been engaged with another person for a long time? Elinor, the lead character of Sense and Sensibility, decides to respect Edward's promise to that girl and remain her deep love in her heart, though she adores Edward very much and Edward's fiancee Lucy is a stupid woman who doesn't deserve Edward's love at all.After reading the novel Sense and Sensibility(S&S in short), I can't stop myself from thinking about all the scenes the book brought me.However, let me make a brief introduction to the novel and its author at first.Jane Austen is my favorite author.In her short life, she wrote six of the greatest novels in the English Language.Besides S&S, she is also famous for Pride and Prejudice, Emma Persuasion, etc.S&S is the first one to be written, but Jane's skills to write are showed completely.Today, her novels, at which she worked with great care, have become a famed and timele favorite.Jane's novels all have something to do with young ladies’ marriage, so does S&S.Elinor is the eldest daughter of Mr.and Mrs.Dashwood.She is composed but affectionate.On the one hand, her growing love for Edward surfers a check;on the other hand, she has to comforts and supports her heart-broken younger sister Marianne.Marianne’s emotional mind and romantic thoughts drives her to an attractive but selfish young man Willoughby, who abandons Marianne and marries wealthy Mi.Gray.Luckily, things turn well.Edward’s fiancee Lucy decides to break up with Edward, so he ultimately marries Elinor after he is free from a four-year wrong engagement.Meanwhile, Marianne thinks over about what kind of person she is truly looking for and accepts the proposal of Brandon, who acts kindly, honorable, and gracious to everyone.Both of the couples live happily ever after.I want to talk about this novel and show admire to Jane in three ways:
First, to the great person she portrayed.It’s clear that comparing Elinor to Marianna, our author likes the former better.Elinor is the heroine of Jane's novel because she is always trying to find a workable middle between paion and reason.She represents qualities of “sense”: reason, social responsibility, and a clear-headed concern for the welfare of others.As for the younger one Marianne, who represents qualities of “sensibility”: emotion, impulsivene, and rapturous devotion.Jane expreed her compaion to Marianne and led her to a saner way.In my opinion, I love both of the sisters.As a matter of fact, Marianne catches most of the fancy of me.She does what she wants to do.She loves who she wants to love.She hates to obey the hypocritical social rules.If we compare Elinor to Xue Baochai, Marianne does have something in common with Lin Daiyu.Marianne doesn’t follow who she doesn’t agree with.What’s more, just like Elinor once says,”Marianne never loves somebody with half of her heart and soul.” How adorable she is!
Second, to the perfect writing skills Jane used.Among all the 50 chapters, a large amount of brilliant conversations and descriptions are found easily.Facing to all the annoying negative characters, Jane can always go right to the heart of the matter: vanity, greed and bad social ideas towards men and women.She isn’t criticizing anyone, but the most talent ironic eays in the world flow under Jane’s pen!On the contract, our author is fond of her lead characters and used her paion to make them vivid.Besides Elinor and Marianne, Edward’s honesty and Brandon’s consideration also impreed me a lot.In addition, the England country scenery which she gave a color to is unbelievable for its beauty!No wonder so many romantic things happened there!
Finally, I’d like to sum up my own feelings.I recognize that, it’s the hardest thing in one’s
lifetime to choose from sense and sensibility.It’s too childish to let sense cover up sensibility.Entire sense doesn’t seem realistic.I’ve learnt that, the sign of growing up means that you can control sense with sensibility.Only by doing this, can you not only feel good about yourself but also get along well with all your surroundings.By Pheonix Lu
