“The Leap” by Louise Erdrich
Would you ever risk your life for someone you loved? In the story “The Leap” the author’s mother does several times.I don’t think I would have the will power to do something like that.For example Anna, the author’s mother, saves herself and her unborn child from a fire.Another instance she saves her child from another fire.Throughout the story I admire Anna more for her bravery when she faces difficult situations when she has to make quick decisions.The first conflict occurs when she’s performing an act with her husband.Their about to leap into the air when lightning strucks and her husband falls to his death.At the time Anna was seven months pregnant and decides to save herself rather than try to save him.Sadly while in the hospital recovering from her burns the baby dies.Besides her baby dying some good does come out of the situation.Anna meets her new husband in the hospital.I think she has an internal conflict because, her husband died and she’s falling in love with another man.The last conflict is somewhat related to the first.She moves into a house with her husband and they have a child together.When Anna’s daughter is seven they have a house fire.Anna climbs to her window practically naked and her husband is flabbergasted that she rescued her.“The Leap” really teaches the reader about love and bravery.Anna faced difficult situations like many people.Sometimes we make decisions and regret them feeling guilty.There was no way Anna could’ve saved her husband from the fire, she would’ve died with him.It was a difficult decision and she made the right choice.She may have felt regret afterwards but she had to choose life or death.
