The book Oliver Twist was originally titled:The Parish Boy＇s Progre.It is the second novel written by Charles Dickens.Charles John Huffam Dickens, regarded as the greatest writer of Britain in nineteenth century, was good at refleting social reality through his works.Defined as “the founder and the greatest representative of critical realism in English literature” by China and fomer Soviet union scholars, he used surperb artistic technique to describe varities of complicated social phenomenons and criticize the dark side of the society.He has created so many dramatic characters that leave his readers deep impreions including Dr.Manette in A Tale of Two Cities, David in David Copperfield and of course Oliver in Oliver Twist.The purpose Dickens wrote this book is to protest social injustice promote reform for the relief of the poor.The novel is about an orphan, Oliver Twist, who was born in a workhouse and lives a miserable life as apprentice in a coffin shop.He escapes and travales to London where he meets Artful Dodger, the leader of a gang who wants to train Oliver as a thief on purpose.Oliver goes through a lot when he is compelled to steal.Finally, with the help of some kind people, the mystery of Oliver＇s birth is solved.Oliver is adopted by Mr.Brownlow and lives a carefree life while the bad guys get their punishment as they deserve.Dickens mercilely exposed and castigated the darkne and hypocrisy of the capitalist society at that time in this novel.Proverty and crime, the cause of the whole story.It describes the fight between good and dviltry, beauty and ugline, justice and evil, praises people of integrity and good nature.It also criticizes hypocricy of the British charity and the rudene of the police.At the same time, it is full of strong romatic emotion and humanitarian feeling.In this book, Oliver、Nancy and Rose are all the representatives of kindne.They goes through a variety of sufferings in this dark world but still ramains pure inside.The evil of the gang is a total contrast to their goodne.It is a eternal truth that the evil will not triumph over the virtuous.Altough Nancy is killed in the end, her death summons jutice, which finally leads to the collapse of the gang.Talking about Oliver Twist, he tries to reclaim those bad guy when he is forced to steal things.He even tries to call the police when he is foisted into a house through its window.He adheres to justice even he gets shot.He would rather die than yield.As a kid, his spirit of persistence is touching and impreive.He has strong pride inside his heart which will will keep down a shriek to the last.About Nancy, she is a combination of good and evil.Her complex sense of worth and out look on life result in her miserable inner conflict.She hopes to be a good person but her love toward Sikes makes her hang back.When Sikes is about to kill her, she even trys to arouse him.Her pure but
blind love eventually causes her death.But her sacrifice is very touching.It makes me think that bad is not always bad.As for Fagin, he is the incarnation of evil.He uses the kids to help him steal.His greedy drives him crazy and eventually dead.But on the other hand, he is not bad all the time.After all, he gives all the children a place to live and take care of them.This is a very claic story.The good are well rewarded and the bad get what they deserve.The most important thing I learn from this novel is that we should never lose ourselves mo matter what plight we are confronted with.Moreover, we should always keep our faith in the eential goodne of human nature.
