Benjamin Franklin: the Man who Invented America Countle legendary figures have achieved iconic status. However, Benjamin Franklin is the unique one.Renowned for his versatility and succe in various domains, the Philadelphia printer, scientist, and statesman was a universal genius. In Benjamin Franklin: Inventing America, Edwin.S.Gaustad presents a fully rounded portrait of this endlely fascinating human being.Extensively researched and footnoted, this one-volume biography reveals how he shaped up his multiple talents, as well as the strength that drove him on.Franklin was not bleed as a child. He was the son of a soap maker, and also the 17th child of the family.Due to poverty, young Franklin had to drop out of school and work as an apprentice in a print shop to help support the family. The work was nothing but strenuous, yet it did give the young apprentice acce to books.Through exposing himself to the best of human wisdom by reading extensively, he gave himself an education.Meanwhile, his industry paid off handsomely. At age 24, Franklin was already one of the wealthiest publishers in Philadelphia. But Franklin didn‟t stop as a popular publisher. At age 40, intrigued by the phenomenon of electricity, Franklin was firm that the subject needed a more systematic investigation. To prove the resemblance between lightening and electricity, he conducted his famous “kite experiment” in a storm. No experiment gave Franklin greater acclaim, either home or abroad.Several years later, Franklin put all these research into practical application by inventing the lightening rod, which made him irreplaceable in the history of modern science.Later, Franklin‟s inventivene went on.Interestingly, he never asked for any patents. As he wrote in his Autobiography, “We should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this should be done freely and generously.”

At age 50, Franklin stepped into politics.Having seen the liberty, equality, wealth and happine of his people deprived by the colonials, he encouraged his fellow Americans to fight against tyranny and protect their rights. He took up his favorite weapon, the pen, to explain carefully and coolly why America should not be directly taxed by the British Parliament.Gradually, Franklin became the one of the strongest voices for the interest of the colonies. Thanks to his courage and leadership, the colonies were eventually brought together, and a new nation started to emerge.Franklin accepted every duty thrust upon him as a faithful statesman. In 1776, the 71 year-old Franklin helped write the Declaration of Independence. The same year, he sailed to France to secure France‟s support for America in the war against the British colonialists. In 1787, Franklin took the job to draft Constitution of the United States of America, with a great many accomplishments already behind him.Through the detailed life stories of Benjamin Franklin, the mystery of how he became a universal genius was gradually unraveled.优秀

Know Yourself, an Admonition for Every Plain Man None of us is more human than another. This is the last sentence of the book The Plain Man and His Wife.Everybody is plain to some degree, including those great minds. As a result, similarities can be found on no matter the rich or the poor, the succeful or the unsucceful, the idle or the diligent, the luxurious or the austere. To the plain men like us, there is only means but no ends about our life. The taste for pleasure always seems vague and far away. Not everybody is willing to endure the risk of life, nor are they positive enough to think in other people‟s place. The whole book, consisted of these four aspects, shows us the tapestry of plain man‟s life, clogged with abundant trivialities and paradoxes.Intrigued by the author‟s unique perspective, I opened the book, wishing to seek the shiny points of wisdom that overflow between the lines. The author, Arnold Bennett is quite famous in Britain. But sadly I don‟t know much about him.In early 20 century, the Britain newly stepped into industry age. Thus, people‟s lives were changed dramatically.Arnold Bennett, as a representative of the middle cla, wrote lots of stories about them. Some to advocate, some to ridicule. In this book, the plain man is supposed to be a middle cla man living in 100 years ago.Even so, readers can also find the sign of themselves on this plain man.The characters of human being never vary too much.We may have our own unique way of living, but we share the same emotion when we are confronted with the same affair. We laugh when we feel happy, we cry when we are sad.We are in pursuit of an ideal life, yet we feel depreed about the daily routine and inevitable trifle. The pleasure or pain that the plain man tasted has infiltrated the blood veels of every people existing in the world.Because we share the same name: human. To this degree, the plain man can be you, can be me, and can be anybody. So the plain man‟s weakne can also be your weakne. His confusion can also be yours. He may be a gentleman, but clearly not gentle enough on his life.He feels unsatisfied with his life, no happine, no means, only ends or rather, destiny. The appointed path stretches inexorably in front, all he could do is to keep going, without reason.A really fundamental question about the appointed path has never been asked. It never occurs to him.I suddenly remembered my primary school, middle school and high school.I walked on my path, leaving one and then stepping into another, feeling rather reasonable in mind.It is the doomed way for everybody who works as a student!Logically, I went to college, and then further my study.I may find a job, find a lover, find a marriage, and one day I may suddenly realize that the youth became the past tense.Horrible! Those dreams and expectations hadn‟t yet been realized!I forget to leave some space for them in the reality. What a shame!I may wake up one day, like the plain man, greet the day with “Oh lord!Another day! What a grind!”

So this time, I force myself to think, to really think about my life, my present life.People say university life is one of the most important periods in one‟s life.It matters a lot in deciding one‟s character, friends circle, career and even family. To compare it with my past 20 years of life, I have to admit that university life is really great! One the one hand, I am set free from the tyranny of the preure about study.I came to realize that there are more things about life, about people and about myself.I can decide what to do and what I don‟t have to do to some degree;on the other hand, I gradually form my own way of living, my own perspective and my attitude about life.So surely I won‟t complain about the boring day.At lease recently I am still indulging in the pleasure of university life. However, time will not stay at this point forever. One day, I will graduate, I will work;I will be old, old enough to be fed up with my life.A traveler is travelling. He has no idea about his destination, nor would he come to think of it.Just as the traveler admitted, he just had to start and he started. The plain man is tagger and deeply affronted by the illogical absurdity of human nature. The plain man knows that he will go to Timbuctoo. But he doesn‟t know why he has to go there. The two people find each other‟s claim quite annoying, but finally they shake hands. This is a really interesting parable. The author tries to explain some aertion and inquiry about life.Since the turpitudes, fatuities and unreason in human nature are unavoidable, the sparkle of wisdom is thereby a bit obscure. So people are apt to forget the immediate end of existence in the means. No awarene of why is formed in people‟s minds. The reason seems to be no reason.Just as the author said, a remedy will be worth finding. In my opinion, the remedy is to find some goals.Just be peaceful and probe deep into your heart.Let your heart tell you what you really want.Wake up those beautiful dreams, those childish wished that has been forgotten long ago. Then, you may find your own meaning of living.Set up some goals, make little plans and adhere to them. The days will no longer be a grind.I remember that during my summer and winter vocations, I always feel dull and bored.I have no homework to do, no preure for study, even no need to do the washing myself.I walk around aimlely, having no plans for tomorrow. So after each vocation, I feel empty in my brain, and a sense of guilty in my heart. The misery of non-achievement outweighs the pleasure of relaxation. However, when the school begins, I come to live again. The delight of achievement can compensate some sense of guilty, so I feel my life full of vigor and appeal again.I think as for the frustration of the plain man is because he has lost the motivation to make progre. He has his job, wife and children. He exhausted himself for the whole life, goes his way ignoring all the interesting oases and experiences. The result is he get what he hoped, but lost his initial intention.I can imagine how he feels.Sometimes I also feel the same. But now, I think I become more aware of what I am doing and what I am supposed to do.Though we are all plain man, the only difference is the period of life.I am in my youth but he has reached the later part of his journey. So the sooner I realize the reason of a boring life, the more pleasure I will create for my future. There must be some days that you are confronted with an unusual succeion of annoyance, exasperations and disappointments——you may feel something must be wrong——but it does happen.Even a trifle can bring about some explosion of peimism, leaving you feel acid and savage. It must have happened to you before,as it is the same with anybody else, especially when you feel you cannot stop the succeion of trifle. The payment of the future is to stultify daily one part of human nature. When you are limited into a certain sort of work and you can‟t quit, this feeling would come out. What would you do? As far as I am concerned, the only way is to find a compromise between the present and the future. When you are in such a bad mood, you must feel awful, seeing no happine from your daily life. However, any problem of human conduce, however hard and apparently hopele, could not be solved by dint of sagacity and ingenuity. The tyrannic routine seems endle, but everything will be the past, only if you are able to find a reason and solution.Never lose the capacity for pleasure. But how can we manage that? There is an ancient counsel:” know yourself.” It hears so trite, so ordinary. But it is really difficult to realize. The truth is, the rarity of is the root of unhappine.Self-knowledge is particular required for the solution of the immediate case that mentioned above.I quite agree with the author at this point.Sometimes I tend to disguise myself with a mask, feeling a sin in not being interested in what interests others, and hoping that I can be liked by everybody. In fact, if you want to please everybody, you please nobody. It‟s only the tiredne that left in your heart. You tell yourself, that you are supposed to do some particular things, rather than with a spontaneous willingne. The true feeling is omitted. When I begin to feel unsatisfied with what I am doing, the succeion of a ma will come out.So I have to get down to the trifle that I am dying to escape from.Suppose that I have always been doing what I like to do, being my real self, I may not be more positive when explosion of peimism come out.See!Your inner feeling is the one that conducts your life! The story of the plain man never ends, „because the river of human nature never ends but keeps flowing. My reflection on it won‟t stop, too. This book is about the plain man, but the principle and argument isn‟t plain at all.It is worth everybody‟s reflection.Life itself is a kind of knowledge, only those who learn well can get the truth of it.I am a plain man, and it really arouses my interest to know more about myself.
