Book Report of Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, is a novel of romance which published on 16 October 1847.Charlotte Bronte was an English novelist and one of the three well-known Bronte sisters.Charlotte was born in Thornton, in 1816.Her mother died of cancer when she was only 5 and left the family in a very poor condition.Fortunately, her father was a knowledgeable man and taught his son and daughters to read, including Charlotte.Unlike her novel, Charlotte’s life has never been easy and she died with an infant inside her in the year of 1855, aged 38.The whole novel is focus on the title character’s life.I divide it into three parts: Jane’s childhood, her life at Thornfield Hall, and ‘after’.Jane, as the other main hero in this novel—Mr.Rochester said, is a quiet, grave and simple girl.Jane’s childhood is very miserable. Her parents are all dead when she was very little and she was forced to live with her uncle. But before long, her uncle died too, leaving poor Jane to his wife and children who think Jane is a burden and treats her very badly.Once, Mrs.Reed even locked her in the red-room when she had done nothing wrong which caused Jane hurt both physically and mentally.Soon, Jane left this family and went to school.During her stay in school, though not happy on the whole, Jane met some kind person, such as Helen and Mi Temple. In order to experience a new life, Jane went to Thornfield as a governe and met her true love, Mr.Rochester.When the couple

decided to get married, Jane found out that Mr.Rochester had already married once and his wife is totally insane.Jane went into despair and left Mr.Rochester.After, Jane met Mr.Rivers and inherited a big fortune from her uncle.Following her heart, Jane rejected Mr.Rivers’ proposal and went back to Mr.Rochester.This novel uses first person narration which makes it very real. And I have to say the description of Jane’s inner thoughts is so detailed that I can almost feel the pain and ecstasy that Jane feels.Under the pen of the author, all of characters seem to have flesh and blood.Another thing that strikes me is that the novel can combine romantic and suspense so well. The night when a fire broke out in Mr.Rochester’s room, it supposed to be a terrifying night because of the mysterious laugh and the darkne. But it somehow became the beginning of love between Mr.Rochester and Jane.In my point of view, this book exprees a spirit of feminism. As a young woman, Jane has been independent enough to make choices all by her own judgment.Unlike nowadays, social cla was very important at that time, though she makes cla discriminations herself, she still choose to pursuit her happine bravely.Jane realizes that St.John asks her to marry him only because of his needing a wife instead of loving her.So, Jane refuses St.John’s proposal shows her want for independence and equality. The only time Jane feels ready to marry a man is when she

is equal to him. This book also tells about paion and forgivene.Jane encounters people of sorts in her life, some kind, some mean.To kind people, without doubt, Jane loves them. But to some mean people just like Mrs.Reed, Jane hates them at first, then she choose to forgive them.Jane is a person has a strong self-esteem, but she treats things in a sensible way.She left Mr.Rochester when she found out that he has a mad wife. But, she came back to him even though Mr.Rochester was blind.I think Jane has a tender heart, otherwise she won’t forgive Mr.Rochester for all the lies he told. And, Helen, who has a great influence on Jane, also has a tender heart and forgives everything not kind. Some people say that book is only about romance, but I think it’s far beyond romance. My favorite part of this novel is the subtle changes of feelings between Jane and Mr.Rochester.When Jane saved Mr.Rochester from fire, Mr.Rochester said,” good night, my –“, then he stopped and bit his lip.I know there was something lovely that Mr.Rochester wanted to say, but the author just won’t let it speak out and try to make it vague. And how Jane hid her deep love for Mr.Rochester and how she envies Mi Ingram also makes me feel sad.But when it all comes clear, that Jane and Mr.Rochester love each other, I almost want to scream, and it is so true and warm.I think this book is truly an excellent book!Although it is very long, it

worth me taking time to read it.Charlotte Bronte did an amazing job writing this.I don’t know how else to explain this but I found the writing to be precious. This book is like a jewel to me.I loved how smart and defending Jane was and how Mr.Rochester was dark and proud. All the characters in this book have their own special personalities, no matter as horrible as Mrs.Reed or as kind as Helen. The story is very complicated but I never found it boring. It’s almost like a quest for hidden treasure because you will never know what will happen next. After all, I think Jane Eyre is good book for everyone to read.Jane is a good girl and she has a lot of good virtues for us to learn, for example, her bravene, her paion and her independence. Our times are far more advanced from hers, but the morality of our society has been witneed a decline.Maybe we should return to the claics and find out what person we really need to be.2012051205郑铧坪
