A TALE OF TWO CITIES
The tale of two cities is a historical story, one of Charles John Huffam Dickens’ long fictions.It tells the story of two men, Charles Darney and Sydney Carton, who look similar but different in personality.The novel portrays a brutal and bloody story, but it also contains love and friendship, which touches me most.In the novel, Dickens describes a typical cruel nobleman—marquis of Evermonde.When he was young, he and his brother stole a countrywoman by force and killed her family.What is worse, he used his power to imprison Dr Manette, a kind and honest man who knew all the things they had done and wanted to disclose their crimes.In order to hide their crimes, Marquis of Evermonde and his brother threw Doctor Manette into prison for 18 years.During these 18 years，Doctor Manette lost his freedom and suffered a great in spirit.I felt unthinkable that Marquis of Evermonde and his brother killed people just as easily as they killed chickens.There is an old saying which means：People who commit too many crimes will kill themselves.Let’s see the
consequence of the Marquis, he lays there like a stone with a knife pushed into his heart.What I like most about this book is that it tells us to conquer evil love with love.Lost in the story, I feel like being together with these characters and experiencing the same exciting events.As we all know, equality and fairne is what people seek, which led to the French Revolution.However, neither equality nor the fairne was got after the revolution.And this is the tragedy of the history.I was heavyhearted when I read what Sydney Carton said before his death’ It is a far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done.It is a far, far better rest that I go than I have ever known.’ What do you think about it when reading this sentence?
