A Teaching Plan for “Using Language” in Unit 2, Book 5 of NSEFC

Material:
Objectives: After this cla students will
1.be able to understand and use these words: sightseeing, delight, royal, uniform, splendid, statue, communism, thrill, pot;and understand some other new words and expreions in context, such as St.Paul’s Cathedral and longitude line.2.know how to skim for the main idea and scan for specific information.3.be able to write a brief tour plan in English.4.appreciate the history and culture of London through reading the text, and appreciate the history and culture of Yuhang by planning a two-day tour of it.Procedure:
Step ILead-in
1.Present learning tasks for this cla to students.2.Ask students some questions about the reading paage(1)What countries does the UK consist of?(2)What is the capital city of…?
3.Show a video clip of 2012 London Olympics promotion.4.Ask students to name some famous buildings and persons they saw in the video.(设计说明:本文与本单元的主课文PUZZLES IN GEOGRAPHY是同一话题的,以提问复习的方式引入新课显得自然合理。伦敦申奥视频片段的目的是为了下一步引出生词,同时引起学生的学习兴趣。)
Step IIVocabulary building
1.Teach these new words using pictures and example sentences: sightseeing, delight, royal, uniform, splendid, statue, communism, thrill, pot
2.Ask students to match the new words with their definitions.(设计说明:通过图片和例句教学生词形象生动,有助于记忆;再配以英语的释义更加深化了学生对生词的理解。)
Step IIIPre-reading
1.Ask students to get the main idea by looking at the title, the pictures and the first sentence of each paragraph.2.Ask students this question: How is the text organized? Inorder.(设计说明:这一步的目的是训练学生的阅读技能skimming,为下一步的细读做准备,同时让学生了解一种文章的叙述方法。)
Step IVWhile reading
1.Ask students to read the text while listening to its recording.2.Ask students to list the places Pingyu visited and her comments on them.3.Ask students some comprehension questions about the text.(设计说明:这一步中既训练学生的阅读技能scanning,又提出了词汇和内容两方面的问题,有利于学生较深入地理解课文。)
Step VPost-reading
Ask students this question: How would you feel when you see Chinese treasures in the British Museum and why?
(设计说明:这个问题的目的是让学生“充当”文本中的人物角色,产生情感体验,而不只是一个冷眼旁观者。)
Step VIConsolidation and application
1.Suppose you could stay in London for only one day, which of these places would
you like to visit and why?
2.Today, a lot of English teachers have come to Yuhang from other parts of
Hangzhou.What places of interest in Yuhang do you suggest they visit?
