一九九四年、我曾经来台北参加一个和杨照先生、詹宏志先生一起的谈话会(由“人间”、远流出版合办)，谈话内容相当丰富，是我到过几个城市中印象最深刻的。听众程度极高，而且问题十分深入，很有深度，和台北的朋友见面实在开心。
今天在这里看到这个场面，好像各路英雄好汉来此参加武林大会一样。其实我本人不大喜欢开演讲会，过去我办《明报》时，若有意见就写社评，不过这有个缺点，就是一个人自说自话，没有赶的，讲得自以为对了，其实对不对也不知道。所以我不爱演讲，但爱对话。
《中国时报》浮世绘版开办“金庸茶馆”，早期本来想叫“金学研究”，但“金学研究”这四个字很不敢当，如果把这个问题回到自己，你我会做怎样的选择?我想选最有财富或最聪明的人都不少，但选最美的人可能希望得到最爱的女人，你爱的女人不一定要最美丽，最美丽的也未必是最好的爱人。西方人的想法和中国人相当不同，如果你问我究竟想当那种人，我总希望自己是有很大的聪明智慧，可以解决人生的很多问题。
世界上的哲学家归纳人生，最后总会发现人生其实很痛苦，有很多问题不能解决。释迦牟尼讲生、老、病、死，都是痛苦的，佛家还提到“怨憎会”，一个自己不喜欢的人老是如影随形跟在旁边，分也分不了，这是一种痛苦;还有“爱别离”，和自己亲密的人分离也是痛苦;还有“求不得”，想得到的东西，最后总是得不到，想研究某种学问，老是弄不懂，想考那个大学考不进去;做生意想赚一笔钱赚不到;想发展很好却不成功，总之世界有很多事情求不得，因为求不得而有痛苦。
我们知道，佛家解决的方法是得智慧，得智慧后，这些痛苦的事情就能解决，因为看破了人生之痛苦无可避免。智慧与聪明不同，聪明可以解决小问题，智慧却能解决大问题，如果实在求不得，就不要求他，不求就没有痛苦。中国人讲“人到无求品自高”，一个人如果不执著追求一件东西，人品自然会高尚，想争取，自然要委屈自己，到了什么都不追求的境界，人品也就清高、逍遥自在。要达到这种境界，当然要有很大的智慧。过去也有人问我想当中国历史上的那两个人?我说我想当范蠡和张良这两个聪明人，他们建立了很大的功业，但后来成功后功成身退，也不贪、也没做什么大官，带著漂亮老婆逍遥自在，这种人很难得。
张良了不起，但有朋友认为范蠡更了不起，因为他带最漂亮的女人走了，不当官后，变成陶朱公做生意，发大财，听起来是很理想的人生。但这种想法其实是很自私的，一切的欲望都满足了，对别人却没什么帮助。范蠡除了帮越国把吴国灭掉这个大贡献外，便无其他，张良总还帮刘建立起汉朝──也许这两个有智慧的人基本上都很有成就，但贡献有别。谈到武侠，我认为武侠小说应该正名，改为侠义小说。虽然有武功有打斗，其实我自己真正喜欢的武侠小说，最重要的不在武功，而在侠气──人物中的侠义之气，有侠有义。
台湾流行崇拜关公，关公的武艺高强没有话说，但他真正受人崇拜，还在于他讲义气，所以民间社会称他关公，他的地位和帝王爷同高。义气在中国社会中是相当重要的品德，外国人和亲朋好友讲love，中国人讲情之外，还讲义，所以要有情有义，单单有情是不行的。做生意谈不成，没关系，彼此之间的“义”还是在的，所谓“买卖不成仁义在”。武侠小说不管任何情况，这个“义”是始终维持的，历史人物或武侠人物，“义”都是很重要的批评标准。外国人问我，“侠”的定义是什么?因为外国人总认为，所谓“侠”只要效忠于某一教会、某一组织，这样道德便很完美，但中国人的“侠”，包括毫无目的的帮助人家，可能还会牺牲自己。
