Good evening, ladies and gentlemen!I’m very honored to be with you all here, to share my thoughts with you about voluntary blood donation.Well, maybe some of you are familiar with that.In our country, citizens should give blood voluntarily, then the blood would be collected, treated, and stored in the blood banks.Patients in the hospital who need it could use the blood for free — what they need to pay for is just a low fee for testing, separating, and so on.Remember that, blood is beyond price.However, we learned that in the past year, a severe blood shortage broke out in many cities such as Kunming and Beijing.At the worst time, the stores in the blood bank could hardly sustain for even two days.Doctors in the hospital had to make difficult decisions on how to obtain adequate blood.Just then, I was an intern at a hospital, I witneed the patients with liver cirrhosis who needed blood transfusion urgently, but they had to wait for at least a whole week, as the severest patients were considered first.How could the crisis have happened? Maybe the reasons are various.First and foremost, le people go to donate blood as a result of lacking correct knowledge or a misunderstanding about voluntary blood donation.Some worry that giving blood could do harm to their health, some are afraid of being infected with HIV, some wonder why should they pay for the voluntarily donated blood…
In fact, researches had indicated that giving moderate blood regularly could stimulate the bone marrow function, and decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases.Besides, the safety during blood collecting had been regulated strictly in the recent years.We don’t need to worry too much about that.After all, to donate blood is to save the lives of those patients in critical condition, while it doesn’t take much of our time, effort, or money.So why don’t we do a favor to those in need — and why not, if we can? Who knows, maybe we will also need blood someday? As members of the society, we are all a family!It is our social commitment to help one another!
