It is a great honor to be here to make a speech.Today my topic is cultural integration with cultural diversity.We’re now living in the trend of globalization, of which cultural integration is the corollary.And further more, cultural integration must rely on lingual exchange.That is, the latter is the fundamental element of the former.And I’d like to analyze the theme “cultural diversity vs.cultural integration” from the perspective of language.Since the ancient times, our earth has more than one country, or tribe.Each country has its own language being as the result of a long-term communication, so I’m always wondering how the first two people from different countries communicated with each other.But it was neceary for them to translate and learn another language.It must have been a special experience.Anyway, we have to thank them for the contribution which promoted the development of our human society.Then we can see that lingual integration has been existing for long.Lingual integration is also called “lingual substitution” academically.It doesn’t mean inventing a kind of mixed language.The fact that people tend to mingle Chinese with English is not the real one.The eential of lingual integration is the penetration of different culture.Along with the beginning of the first industrial revolution, the world was gradually becoming a whole.Till now, a great number of people have mastered one or even more foreign languages.They talk about their native culture with foreigners freely and more and more foreign words are brought in.Lingual integration links people all over the world.If people of different languages want to communicate with each other, “translation” may be eential for most of them.Many people may have the idea that one language can be translated into another freely as we like.But I’ve ever noticed an interesting phenomenon that many native words can’t be exactly translated into other languages.“Panache” “esprit de corps” in French and “zeitgeist” in German for example, no way could we translate them into English.We can only use them the way they are.Once an English speaker said “I aume”.Then the French translator put it into “I deduce” while the Ruian put “I consider”.Whatever it was translated into, the English meaning of “I aume” had gone.From the point of my view, the language of any country is the soul of the nation and is irreplaceable.Generally speaking, we do need lingual integration for the development of our society, but since each language is unique and reflects a nation’s own culture, we must try our best to make it integrated and keep it diverse at the same time.So it is with the culture.As far as I’m concerned, cultural diversity and cultural integration are not contradictory.We can build a multicultural society which shows tolerance and respect of diversity on the base of certain common values shared by the public.The world is to be a small village with various cultures in it, and we are the lucky beneficiaries.Thank you.
