Giving is Receiving—Personal Growth in Volunteer Work Morning, ladies and gentlemen.Last summer, I volunteered to work as an English teacher in a primary school for children of migrant workers. To be accurate, I didn’t volunteer.I was dragged in.literally.When my friends first hit upon the idea of this project, I was all against it: “What? To spend my vacation standing in the heat, yelling at a bunch of nine-year-olds who couldn’t even speak proper Mandarin Chinese? And besides, there’s no pay for my toil. No, I’m definitely not going.” My friends twisted my arms to have me join them.Unexpectedly, the first leon I taught turned out a leon for me.The moment I stepped into the shabby claroom, I was touched by the loud, respectful voices in unison: “Good morning, teacher!” Instead of fooling around, the children were thirsty for knowledge and efficient in absorbing everything I was able to give them. This made me despise myself for I hadn’t even prepared for the cla.During the break, I leaned over the squeaky desk, chatting with a sweaty boy in the front row: “Without air-conditioning, it’s really hot here. Are you tired?” “Not at all,” said he, shaking his head.“It’s fine here.My Dad builds asphalt roads. That is really tiring and hot.”

As summer advanced, my enthusiasm as a teacher grew.I prepared my leon carefully and even used some methods my teachers used.I organized many group activities to give the kids fun.Strangely enough, the heat was also becoming le and le unbearable.Soon, my one-month volunteer work came to an end. When I was leaving my last cla, I turned back and saw smiling faces and waving hands.Never before had I ever had such a feeling of sadne, which was neverthele mixed with a sense of enrichment, fulfillment and happine.I was paid for my work, amply paid, not in terms of money, but something more valuable. My English was improved.I was able to teach it, although not very profeional.I learned about the graroots-level society.Inside myself a heart is growing, a heart that not only beats for myself, but cares for others as well. The volunteer work gave me a precious little chance to say thanks to people like the little boy’s father, who construct highways and undergrounds, build up modern skyscrapers, and make our cities more and more beautiful. To help the children with their English was all I could do at present to show my gratitude to these unsung heroes. The world may not have been fair to them, so privileged and bleed people like me are obliged to do whatever we can to help make their life better.Whatever I do for them, however, I know it cannot be compared with what they have done to improve the quality of life in our cities.Ladies and gentlemen, now I realize that volunteering shouldn’t be just a one-time personal experience. It should be a lifetime activity of everybody. Many of us are now offering our aistance to the needy and to each other. Our efforts have indeed made a difference.Whether we are helping children with their schooling, or caring for the elderly in nursing homes, and helping out with 2008 Beijing Olympics, we will not only contribute to the harmony of the world but also elevate ourselves.Emerson once said, “It’s one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” He was right.I hear that my university is going to organize another voluntary teaching program this summer. This time I won’t be dragged in.I will volunteer.第12届21世纪杯全国英语演讲比赛亚军钟石演讲视频及演讲稿

英语演讲稿:

Ladies and gentlemen, good morning!

I’m from Sichuan Province, which is also the place pandas come from.Last summer, I volunteered to be a tour guide for a group of kids from a rural elementary school, who had been invited by the 1)Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center to see the pandas.Halfway through our trip, a little boy told me he thought the pandas?home looked a bit dirty and asked whether he could clean their 2)enclosures.I was surprised that this boy, who was so desperately in need of help himself, was thinking of helping the giant pandas!I had volunteered to offer him my time and knowledge, and he had volunteered to provide the pandas with a feeling of human warmth.Though different in form, both types of help meant something to the respective receivers. Many people have an outdated 3)perception of volunteer work, 4)aociating it with the 19th century ideal of 5)charitable deeds, done by the haves for the have-nots.However, offering help today does not require that one has money, knowledge or materials, and therefore the right to perform volunteer work is not 6)restricted to people who are able to give these things to others, but belongs to anyone who can benefit society in moral, spiritual and emotional ways that money alone cannot buy.In other words, anyone can volunteer, as long as they are willing to help.Furthermore, having a volunteering spirit gives one the ability to do a good deed at any time.Last year, CCTV, awarded the ?)2006 China Prize for People Who Move China?to a countryside woman who, for 30 years, has been taking care of five senior citizens, with whom she has no blood ties.Public recognition was not the driving force behind her years of tirele

work.Neither had any special event in her life pushed her to serve these people. The volunteering spirit she 8)manifested was a natural flow of affection toward people in need, and was reflected in every tiny thing she had done for each of these five elderly people over the years. Her example teaches us that the 9)eence and power of the volunteer spirit is not only in offering help to anyone, but also in doing so whenever, and indeed, wherever it is needed. In practical terms, this means that we do not have to wait until the Tree-Planting Day to plant a tree for the betterment of environment.Likewise, we don’t have to wait until the 10)tsunami hits the headlines to help poor people living in South Asia;and we do not have to wait until the Olympic Games begin to show our 11)hospitality to our foreign visitors.Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get;we make a life by what we give.”Ladies and gentlemen, I hope every one of you earns a wonderful living and gets plenty;but I hope even more that all of us, by giving people in need part of whatever we’re bleed with, can lead a fulfilling life we will never regret having lived. That’s all for my speech.Thank you.第十二届“21世纪杯”全国英语演讲比赛季军,杨赫,来自清华大学英语演讲稿:Honorable judges, ladies

第十二届“21世纪杯”全国英语演讲比赛季军,杨赫,来自清华大学

Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon.I believe we need a longer March in China. On March 5th, 2005,I volunteered to visit an orphanage with may clamates. The kids there were very excited about our visit and we had a great time together.A little girl impreed me most. She followed me everywhere and kept asking me questions of all kinds. Before we left the orphanage, I said to the little girl ,“Maybe, I can make one of your wishes come true.If you had just one wish, what would it be?” After a short hesitation, she replied,“ I wish......I wish every month was March, because you won't come back to me after March.Nobody comes back to me after March.” I was shocked by her answer.I felt great pain inside and realized that something was not going right. The month of March is called “the Month of Lei Feng in China.” Lei Feng was a Chinese soldior admired for his willne to help others. In memory of him, it is advocated that we do some voluntary work in March. Is there anything wrong with "the month of Lei Feng? Of course not.Helping others through voluntary work is a glorious tradition we should always treasure. However ,one month alone, is not enough to keep the little girl's heart warm throughout the year, one month alone, is not enough to bring our love and care to those who are always in need.We need a longer March in China.March should last all year round. What can we do to achieve this goal, then? What can we do to make the little girl's dream come true? Here two of my suggestions. The first is, we should continue to promote the idea that when we give, we also receive. We should be grateful to those who need our love and care, for it is through helping them that we receive acknowledgement and respect, and it is through helping them that we realize our personal value and achieve a sense of belonging.I feel grateful to those children in the orphanage.I t was thses children who helped me realize that I am useful and I am needed. My second suggestion is, everybody, if poible , should start doing voluntary work right now.Do not wait until you are free.Do not wait until you get rich.Take action now ,and make a commitment to it.Maybe our small donation to poor children won't immediately change their fates.Maybe our smiles we bring to the patients fighting against cancer won't immediately relieve their pain. But ,I believe, our consistent and constant efforts throughout the year will surely bring voluntary work

in China toward a better future.Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen, we are approaching the end of March. When March is over , do we stop giving love and care to those who need it ? When March is over , do we pack up our volunteer spirit and store it in the closet until next year? No, that was not wha we want!We want a longer March. We need a longer March, long enough to warm up those lonely and hopele hearts, long enough to allow the flowers of our volunteer spirit to bloom and grow forever.Thank you!
