Dragon boat festival, also called Double Fifth Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar.This festival is celebrated to memorize a famous poet, the minister of the ancient state, called Qu Yuan, who committed suicide by drowning himself in the river for the love of his country.The activities that we have includes dragon-boat races.In the past, it is to scar the fish and retrieve the body of Qu, while nowadays, it is not only for memorizing but also for entertaining.The bow of the dragon boat is attached by a wooden dragon head, and a dragon tail decorates the stern.Making zongzi is an another important convention for us to celebrate.Zongzi is eaten to symbolize the rice offerings to Qu.In the ancient times, people threw it to Qu in the river, wishing fish and shrimp may eat zongzi but not Qu’s body.It is made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves.And people often put some beans , chestnuts or yolk in it.It is also a very popular practice to drink a kink of Chinese liquor seasoned with realgar at this festival, which is said to be a protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year.Apart from these activities, we also hang calamus and moxa, an oriental plant, on the front door and wear spice bag and so on.While the most important thing for us is that family members can hold together to appreciate the holiday.
