Overview: On March 11, 2011, an earthquake hit the coast of Japan, causing a devastating tsunami that swept over cities and farmland in the northern part of the country.Recorded as 9.0 on the Richter scale, it was the most powerful earthquake ever to hit the country.A series of aftershocks follows, many over a magnitude of 7.0.In the days that followed, the official death toll of the tsunami and the earthquake has climbed to more than 8,000.As the Japan’s Self Defense Forces and the international search and rescue team struggled with a rescue effort, Japan also faced the worst nuclear emergency;explosions and leaks of radioactive gas took place in three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.They released radioactive material directly into the atmosphere.Powerful Quake and Tsunami Devastate Northern Japan By MARTIN FACKLER

On Friday, at 2:46 p.m.Tokyo time, the earthquake hit.First the citizens heard the loud sound, saw the shaking skyscrapers, furniture and crashing highways.Then they saw waves as high as 30 feet rush onto shore, sweeping away cars and carrying tall buildings toward factories, fields and highways.By Saturday morning, Japan was filled with scenes of sadne, as survivors called for help and rescuers searched for people.Japan’s Self-Defense Forces and firefighters had evacuated about 150 of schools.On the roof top of a hospital in the city, doctors and nurses were waving white flags and pink umbrellas.On the floor of the roof, they wrote “Help” in English, and “Food” in Japanese.“I never experienced such a strong earthquake in my life,” said Toshiaki Takahashi, 49, a citizen at Sendai City.“I thought it would stop, but it just kept shaking and shaking, and getting stronger.”
