Hello and welcome back to the third piece of my blog this week.This weekend, 19th and 20th of September, London is holding its biggest architecture festival 建筑设计节-Open House for the 18th year running and it attracts more visitors every year.It is the only opportunity of the year for the public to go into some of the listed buildings 国家保护建筑 for a free guided tour 导游带领的参观.Famous buildings include the City Hall, Foreign Office, Lloyds of London as well as Bush House –home of the BBC World Service 国际台.As I've been working in Bush House for 15 years I'd like to share with you some of the interesting facts about this building.Bush House in central London is named after Irving T.Bush of the Bush Terminal Company of New York, who built it.The architect 建筑师 chosen was fellow American Harvey Corbett.Initially they wanted to build a vast new trade centre, but soon after construction began there was an economic slump 滑坡/萧条 hitting trade and manufacturing 贸易和制造业.So they had to change the originally idea accordingly.As a result of this four of the fivebuildings were adapted 改建 for more conventional office 普通办公用 use.Despite this, Bush kept to the original spirit of his plan, which is to make Bush House a symbol of friendship between Britain and America.How did he do this?
As you can see at the top of the front entrance of the building there are two imposing figures 雄伟的。They hold between them the torch of human progre above the motto 箴言 'To the friendship of English speaking peoples' The figures were carved from Indiana limestoneby American sculptre 女雕塑家Malvina Hoffman in her New Jersey 新泽西 studio and shipped over.As you can see, the creator, the architect and the sculptre were all American, no wonder Bush House looks very American.Another significant feature of Bush House is that on completion, it was declared the most expensive building in the world, costing $10million.The original building had a badminton court 羽毛球场, a cinema and even a small swimming pool in the basement 地下室.The swimming pool was later converted into the very first studio in the country and played a vital role during the Second World War.Visitors often asked us whether Bush House has any connection 关系 with George W Bush.The
answer is no.If you happen to be in London around the third weekend of September in the future I highly recommend that you come to see Bush House during the Open House festival as you can come in for a guided tour.And I can aure you that it will be an eye-opening experience.Let me tell you this, all of my colleagues – past and present, love this building.It gives us a sense of pride 自豪感 as we walk into this building.It also provides a source of inspiration 激励 for people working here.I think that learning about architecture can open up new ways of expreing ideas, reinvigorate perceptions of the world around us, and deepen an understanding of the individual’s role and responsibility in wider society.了解建筑能让人开拓视野，从新的角度来表达思想，重新焕发我们对周围世界的认知并加深理解个人在社会中的作用和责任。
