新概念英语3中worth的奇特用法
本人在学习新概念英语3的时候发现Leon 6 “Smash and Grab”这课中出现了一个非常奇怪的worth用法,就是课文最后一句“They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds”。北京大学制作的新概念英语视频教程认为worth在这个句子中做名词,主讲教师还举了一个例子:$4000 worth of equipment,中文翻译是价值四千美元的设备。Worth做名词没问题,但这种用法很少见。主讲教师还把课文最后一句进行了改写:“They had got away with diamonds worth of thousands of pounds”,并解释说这里worth就是形容词了。照她的解释,此处worth是形容词与of连用做后置定语修饰diamonds了,但这种用法也非常奇特,因为以前见到得都是worthy of做后置定语修饰前面的名词,我甚至怀疑是不是解释错了?欢迎大家共同来探讨这个问题。
注:我还把上面的内容翻成了英文,如有错误,敬请指正。谢谢!
The Rare Use of ‘Worth’ in NCE-3
I have discovered the rare use of „worth‟ in leon 6 “Smash and Grab” while I have learnt the NCE-3 textbook. The last sentence in the article is “They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds”.The “worth” is explained as a noun by the teacher in the teaching video made by Peking University. The teacher also gave another example: $4000 worth of equipment.I have no doubt that worth can be used as noun, but the use in the article is really rare. The teacher also adapted the last sentence as “They had got away with diamonds worth of thousands of pounds”,and explained the worth here is an adjective.According to her explanation, worth is combined with “of “as a postpositive attribute and modify diamonds. But the use is also rare because I have seen “worth of” is used as postpositive attribute to modify the noun(s)before the phrase.I even doubt the teacher made a mistake.Welcome everyone to discu the interesting problem. Thanks!
