The main reason why I choose this topic is that there has been no one from mainland China who won the Nobel Prize by accepted the government.Representing the top of international award, why Chinese people called the intelligent in the world can‟t achieve it? Secondly, why do we pay more attention to the prize? Thirdly, I want to acquire much detailed information about it, including its history, filed, organizations and so on.As we all known, every year since 1901 the Nobel Prize has been awarded for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and for peace.The Nobel Prize is an international award administered by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden.In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank(瑞典银行)established The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize.Each prize consists of a medal, personal diploma, and a cash award.1 The Nobel Prize are widely regarded as the most prestigious
awards given for intellectual achievement in the world.According to the will in 1895, Nobel instructed that most of his fortune be set aside as a fund for the awarding of five annual prizes “to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.” 2
After Nobel death, the Nobel Foundation was set up to carry out the testament and handle his founds.In his will , he had authorized that four
different institutions，three Swedish and one Norwegian，can iue the Prize.Respectable and knowledgeable, five people in these fields are composed of one institution.Although the winners are announced in October and November, the selection proce begins in the early autumn of the preceding year, when the prize-awarding institutions invite more than 6,000 individuals to propose, or nominate, candidate for the prizes.3
The Nobel Banquet is an event many would give a fortune to attend.Alas, only 1,300 guests can be seated at the Blue Hall of the City Hall of Stockholm where the Banquet has been held since 1934.During the first decades, 'consommés' or clear soups like 'Torture Claire' were common starters.Today, the guiding principle is that the menus should have a touch of Scandinavia.Every Nobel Banquet has a particular theme.This is reflected in the decorations and the entertainment for the evening.Lilies, orchids, and roses in striking colors are used to enhance the theme for the evening.These flowers come all the way from San Remo, a center for flower cultivation on the Italian.Every year, more than 23,000
flowers are used as decorations in connection with the Nobel festivities.4
There are some anecdotes of the Nobel Prize.For example, US.President Barack Obama received the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize in Rose Garden of White House in Washington on Oct.9, 2009 , because the Nobel Institution said his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international
diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.However ,that we don‟t know what he dose can get this prize.It happens that there is a similar case.The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2010 to Liu Xiaobo for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China.The Norwegian Nobel
Committee has long believed that there is a close connection between human rights and peace.Such rights are a prerequisite for the “fraternity between nations” of which Alfred Nobel wrote in his will.But I make these examples not say that we needn‟t care for the Nobel Prize.So many western, Japanese and ethnic Chinese scientists achieve the Nobel Prize, except for the mainland of China.From my perspective, the reasons contain two types of aspects,objective and subjective reasons.Firstly, the scientific and cultural tradition of a country plays a quite important role in its innovation
capacity and technological development and the winning of the Nobel Prize.In the Chinese history, there is a bright side in the scientific and cultural tradition, which has boosted the development and progre of the Chinese nation.However, there are some shortcomings and flaws as well, which may be a negative factor for China to win the Nobel Prize.We should view and treat the shortcomings and deficiencies in Chinese scientific and cultural tradition objectively.Secondly, the examination system in China stifled people‟s interest in exploring the natural laws;the
eight-legged eay smothered the interest of the students in exploring nature and they focused themselves on ancient books and the pursuit of fame and fortune;“to become an official by excelling in one‟s study” has become the first aspiration of the scholars.In fact, this influence still roots deep in the present Chinese society.The strong official-oriented mentality has exerted severe negative impact on science and innovation.There, there was a lack of in-depth exploration on the theories and laws of the objective things.Thirdly, most of the so-called theoretical innovation in China is just the interpretation of the theories of some politicians instead of real innovation.There is some free academic
atmosphere in China compared with the situation before the reform and opening-up.However, the mentality of “the ruler guides the subject;the father guides the son and the husband guides the wife” has existed in
China for thousands of years, which has severely imprisoned scholars and resulted in the fact that top priority is given to seniority and authority.There is no academic equality, which is not conducive to the full play of the creativity of middle-aged or especially young researchers.Finally, the Nobel Pries isn‟t as holy and pure as we imagine.It also combines with powerful rights, from above examples we can see.However, we shouldn‟t loose our heart and should apply our entire wisdom to gain the prize.As Beijing Youth News saying, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine, suggests that „it won‟t
take too long, perhaps ten years, for Chinese to receive a Nobel Prize‟.5
