Reading report on A Tale of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities is one of Dickens's most important representative works. With the broad real background of the French Revolution, the author takes the fictional character Doctor Manette's experience as the main clue, interweaves three independent but incidently cro-correlated stories--the unjust charge, love and revenge together. In A Tale of Two Cities, the plot is cri-croed and the clue is complex., which shows Dickens's language skill. In the novel, the author shapes three kinds of characters: feudal aristocracy, revolutionary maes and the idealized figures.Every character has his own characteristics.Doctor Manette is honest and kind but suffers the persecution actually.Lucie is beautiful and gentle.Charles is graceful and noble.Lorry is upright and honest.Sydney is indifferent, unconventional but also selfle and lofty.Mi Pro is straightforward and loyal.Evremonde brothers are cruel and sinister...The complex hatred is hard to solve;the cruel revenge has made more hatreds;loves rebirth in the hell edge, but take the life as the price.Through the three kinds of characters, Dickens emphasizes three main aspects: the disapproval of the nobility’s oppreion towards the poor and the revolution, humanism, as well as love.Evremonde brothers are the representatives of the feudal aristocracy. They are cruel to their people. They steal a woman, destroy her family’sland, take their food, and kill her brother. When Doctor Manette finds the

truth, he is taken to the prison and spends 18 years there. The younger Evremonde brother even hits a peasant’s child to death. Here Dickensdescribes the French famers’ miserable sufferings with great sypathy and condemns the feudal aristocracy for their evils.Madame Defarge is a representative of the revolutionary maes. She is the younger sister of the poor woman killed by the Evremonde brothers. And she holds great hatred to them, even their whole family. She remembers everything and knits every name into her work. Finally, she rushs into the Bastille and kills its officers. In order to revenge, she makes great efforts to send Darnay and his family to death, unluckily, she is shot to death by her own gun at last. She fights for violence and evils, but also dies of them.In the novel, many innocent men and women dies for no reason, and everyday brings more deaths.Through Madame Defarge’s death, Dickens exprees his disapproval towards revolutions.Any form of oppreion should be prevented, either the feudal aristocracy’s persecution to their people or the peasants’ revolt to the nobility.Charles is the nephew of a marquis, but he abandones the privilege and moves to London. There he works hard to earn his living and manages to be a French teacher.Later he marries Lucie. One day, Darnay receives a letter from Monsieur Gabelle, who has been arrested and taken to Paris. In order to save his old servant, Darnay goes back to France, but he is arrested and sentenced to death. As to Carton, he slips into the prison with the help of Mr.Barsad, changes Darnay’s clothes and dies for him.The contrast

between Darnay and Carton’s self-sacrifice spirits and the revolutionists’ violence emphasizes their noble qualities and heroical behaviours. They reflect Dickens's idea of humanism.Love is also a very important elemant in the novel. When he knowns whose son Darnay is, Doctor Manette keeps his feelings secret for his daughter’s happine. And Carton’s love towards Lucie is more moving.“But you should know that for you, or for everyone close to you, I would do anything. Please remember always, that there is a man who would give his life to keep someone you love alive and close to you.”

Above is Carton’s promise to Lucie, and he finally sacrifice himself to save Darnay because of his deep and great love to her.Dickens accords great importance to love. With the love as the tie, Doctor Manette, Darnay and Lucie form a happy family. It’s a very different way from revolution to solve the society contradiction. Here Dickens not only praises love, but also indicates his hope for a harmonious society.A Tale of Two Cities is a famous realistic novel. In the beginning, Dickens describes a vivid picture of the society of that time.Even though the relations among the characters are a little complex, he clearly states the story and conveys his ideas.班级:07英师本6班学号: 070201615姓名:雷丽冰
