Something about Mark Twain’s The Story of the Bad Little Boy As an English major, I enjoy more opportunities to get to know the diverse culture of the world, especially the English literature.Among the splendid works of both English writers and American writers , Mark Twain from the USA appeals to me most.It was in a flea market organized by the graduates that I happened to get this The Selected Short Stories of Mark Twain.This book consists of 24 beautiful short stories of this great author ,including the well-known The notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg and the 1000000 Bank-note.There is no doubt that all those stories are marvelous ,however the story that imprees me most is another one ,The Story of a Bad Little Boy.From its name we can know that it is a story about a bad and naughty boy and the boy is called Jim ,just like other boys’ name in the Sunday book, but this Jim is quite different from the common ones.Here are some his stories: Jim has a rough mother;Jim once stole his mother’s jam but denied it and get severely whipped by his mother instead of confeing the mistakes ,begging for forgivene and being bleed by mother’s tears’ pride and thankfulne;Jim climbed up in Framer Acorn’s apple trees to steal apples as many as he could and chowed down all of them without breaking his legs when coming down the trees and being torn by the guard dog;Jim stole the teacher’s penknife and make a traditionally moral boy get thrashed instead of himself;Jim even went boating on Sunday but didn’t get drowned and at last Jim grew up and became a hooligan but lived a very wealthy life.I really enjoyed the story while reading it because I think probably it reminded me of my childhood life in my hometown when I was still living in the pictureque countryside.What Jim had done was partly I once did , which appeared really familiar and memorable to me.Secondly, the writing style of this short story is quite humorous and the language is neat and simple.Yes, it’s how Mark Twain wrote and told a story.However, it is far from enough just to be humorous.His witty and wisdom words have made the world relax and reconsider the realistic American society.Why Jim varies from other children is because he is bright ,rebelled , and of course naughty.Jim behaviors against the traditional religious rules make him so fresh and expreive to the readers.As far as I an concerned , Jim acts as a sharp irony to the religion and the rigescent homily.Mark Twain points out that how absurd the idea is that bad things happened to those who did them.Mark Twain uses many rhetorical devices in his article to narrate the story, such as the irony , hyperbole, parallelism , helping the readings easily picture the contrast between what Jim does and what others do.Thus we can clearly feel the narrator’s acid-tongued cynic tone.All above is my thoughts about the Story of a Bad Little Boy by Mark Twain,a memorable writer who made the world laugh but suffered a lot from the bitterne of the life.董博
