The Strategies for English Vocabulary learning In a middle school

Abstract:

Vocabulary plays a vital role in English learning, but vocabulary learning not only makes many middle school students feel very difficult, but also it is the biggest obstacle for many students.So it is very important to help students solve these problems.The paper analyzed the current situation of English vocabulary learning in a middle school, and pointed out the reasons which led to this situation.And then, in order to let students master more vocabularies.This paper provided some effective strategy of vocabulary learning.In the end I offered students some advice to understand and apply these methods in vocabulary learning.Key words:

ⅠIntroduction

In recent years, many iues on vocabulary learning have been studied, such as the importance of some direct vocabulary learning techniques and effectivene of different vocabulary learning strategies.A vocabulary is basic in English learning.Without a sufficient vocabulary, students will definitely have trouble in effective communication.So helping students increase their vocabulary effectively becomes an urgent iue.The purpose of the present research is to improve that students learn vocabulary abilities.The thesis introduced some practical strategies.The thesis focuses on the use of vocabulary learning strategies.This paper consists of four parts.In the first part I analyzed the current situation of vocabulary learning in a middle school.The second part I focused on causes of unsucceful vocabulary learning.The third part I provided some practical strategies and advice.The last part is the conclusion of the thesis.2.Literature Review

2.1 Foreign research of vocabulary learning strategies

The study on language learning strategies began in the 1970s, and this campaign mainly studied that how learners learn a language and what effects of the strategies they use on their language acquisition(Schmitt.N, 1997).The early research of language learning strategies mainly listed learning strategies and simple claification of the good language learners.Oxford(1990)made claification system for learning strategies.In cognitive psychology field,he also made lots of research on vocabulary learning.Nunan(1982)studied the method in vocabulary table and concluded it was one of the most useful methods to accumulate a large vocabulary effectively in a short time.Scrivener(1994), Nunan(1992)& Oxford(1990)had discued several strategies of vocabulary learning in detail.At the same time, many researchers proved that learners master a large of words by reading widely.Many foreign scholars(Oxford, 1995)with empirical method had proved that adequate vocabulary learning strategies could help students achieve good effect of vocabulary learning in a limited study period.2.2 Domestic research of vocabulary learning strategies

Chinese scholars made research on concept and strategy of English vocabulary learning.Wang Wenyu(2007)used quantitative vocabulary test methods to study Chinese college students' strategies of English vocabulary learning.Some scholars based on students' vocabulary conducting a detailed investigation(Li Songhao & He Shaoqing, 2010).They took the questionnaire and vocabulary test methods to investigate the condition of student's vocabulary growth, and studied student's ability of vocabulary learning with language ability.Li Songhao(2006)used empirical investigation and analysis of vocabulary learning for junior high school students.Chen Jiansheng(2010)based on the analysis of Langacker's grammar theory, accomplished the combining theory with practice teaching of English vocabulary, and made a system to explore the methodology of English vocabulary learning and staged a bold attempt, and so on.According to above research, we can see, in recent years, there have been a large of fruits about vocabulary learning all over the world.Experts and scholars had made lots of achievements, but these previous researches also have several limitations.The scope of research was mostly confined to cognitive and meta-cognitive strategy, neglecting learning ideas and social emotional strategies.3.The Status of Middle School Students’ Memory Ability and Strategies of English Words

Learning English is like building a tall building, and words are like building’s bricks paing through the entire English learning proce.So the quantity of English vocabulary is the eential condition for students to learn English well.In the beginning of English study, students’ learning enthusiasm is very high, and they think English is very interesting.However, as teaching and learning deeply, they find English vocabulary is more and more and longer than before.Some students begin to fear, to escape, and even to hate English.With the time going, students may lose interest in learning English.Along with the growth of age, more and more words like mountains stand in front of the students.Therefore, mastering English words becomes the base in learning English.What problems will the students meet in the proce of memorizing words? 4 Some advice for students’ vocabulary learning

Ⅴ Conclusion

This paper discued some main problems and causes in present vocabulary learning in China.All the students and teachers are aware that vocabulary is eential for foreign language learning.This thesis introduced some strategies to help students learn vocabulary.Firstly, the strategy inferring word-meaning provides some ways for students.Secondly, the most common word-formation is a very important way, which can help them improve their abilities of vocabulary learning, and also can help them memorize and choose a right word.Thirdly, students also can use dictionary and other strategies to engage in vocabulary learning, and it’s very useful for them to enlarge their words.At last, this thesis provided some strategies and advice to solve the difficulties in their vocabularies learning.Generally speaking, vocabularies play a decisive role in English learning.Students should grasp each chance to practice improving their abilities in vocabularies.Of course, there’re still some problems with vocabularies.I shall try my best to help them analyze the problems further using the scientific methods and try my best to solve these problems.Bibliography:
