芒格说：―在这投资领域中，若没做过扎实的阅读工夫，我不认为你可以成为真正优秀的投资人，而我也不认为有哪一本书可以为你做到这些。‖ 在阅读中，建立自己的―思维模式格栅‖，这需要大量阅读数学、生物学、物理学、社会学、心理学、哲学和文学等各学科及相关学科中著名科学家的重要著述，了解并熟悉书中介绍的核心概念，将不同学科的思考模式联系起来并融会贯通。同时，将这些理论应用到投资上去，进行正确思考和独立思考，进而聪明地投资，从而取得最佳投资回报。
芒格说：―我想自己不是受到良好教育的典范，我是自己学会通过阅读而获取自己想要的信息的。我一生中常常如此。我经常是更喜欢已经作古的杰出导师而不喜欢仍在人世的老师。‖
