Modern Times is one of Charlie Chaplin’s famed works.It tells us a story of industry, of individual enterprise---human crusading in the pursuit of happine.The story happened in an electro steel corporation.The president of this corporation just sat in his office comfortably, watching the video surveillance to make sure the workers were working hard.He could also command the workers to do more work by the video.So it’s obvious that the workers were under great preure.They had no time to take a rest, let alone a short time for cigarette for relaxing, because everywhere had video surveillance even in the toilet.What’s more, to make the workers keep working even in their meal time, and be more efficient and low-cost, the president asked a worker played by Charlie Chaplin to try a new machine called automatic feeding machine.What a terrible idea!After testing the machine, it turned out to be a terrible machine as well.For it wasn’t practical at all.As the heavy work went on, the time had marched on to late afternoon.The worker played by Charlie couldn’t bear the work preure any more.He got crazy.He couldn’t stop working without the conscience that his behaviour had led up to chaos in the
corporation.Then he was sent to hospital.Finally, he was cured of a nervous breakdown but without job.He had to leave the hospital to start life anew.The cruel scene makes us impreive, and all of us hope it wouldn’t happen neither to people around us nor to ourselves.
