I Love My Country---This I Believe
I was instilled with patriotism at the age of seven and for the first time I found my identity--being Chinese.I was so proud of that because she had countle achievements in history.Whenever I saw the national flag rise, a grand patriotic feeling flowed in my veins.As I grew older, I gradually learned more about my country, including negative information about her: some high-profile officials were corrupt;coal mine accidents caused many deaths that the local governments masked again and again.I was so disappointed to hear the news and began to doubt myself.“Should I love and believe in her? She has so many unforgivable faults.” I was so doubtful and helple as to avoid answering the question.With these thoughts in my heart, I headed to Oxford last year.At EF(Education First)school I made some foreign friends, one of whom was my teacher James Boundra.One day during the lunch, I sat with him and told him how I couldn’t help envying the clean rivers, and blue sky, as well as the transparent political system and people’s sense of order.He only asked me a seemingly easy question, “Do you know decades ago, our river was also heavily polluted, mainly from factories?” I wasn’t sure of his point, so I frowned.“Well, actually pollution exists in every country;so do corruption and other problems.Your country can’t stop them from happening all of a sudden because it’s still developing.Remember that development is not static but dynamic.” Before we finished eating and left for the cla, my teacher told me that when our two countries were at the same stage of development, they both had similar shortcomings.He also told me not to lose hope for my country.From our short conversation, I picked up an important word---development.I kept it in mind and thought it over.In my six weeks at Oxford, I witneed the beauty of people and places.However, I had ignored the fact that their achievements were based on years of development and efforts.I asked myself how I could complain about a developing and progreing country.No one can be truly perfect, but should pursue the ideal.James’s advice changed my mind.Early in the morning of August 21st, 2009, I got off a plane and arrived in the Shanghai airport.A red banner caught my eye: “Welcome to your motherland.” Suddenly, tears sprung to my eyes.I believed then that I loved my country without any doubt.From then on, I have never doubted my love even though I may hear some negative information about China.What I can do is to believe in my country, to hope the best for my country, and to help change my country if poible.
