A broken American dream
The Great Gatsby is a famous novella written by Francis Scott Fitzgerald(1896-1940), one of the most significant writers in the twentieth century in America. As a matter of fact, this story was mainly based on his own experience. This novella was first published in 1925 in New York. And it included 187 pages in all.So in this review, I want to make a brief introduction about this great novella.Besides, I will state some of my own thoughts about this book.In summary, this book described the life of those who lived in the middle or high cla in the 20th century in America through an ordinary love story with a sad ending. And this story was told by a common youth named Nick Carraway who was eager for pursuing wealth in 20th' New York. This story said about the main character Jay Gatsby. He loved a wealthy and beautiful girl named Daisy Fay when he was a young but poor soldier.Later, he was forced to the World War.When he was back, Daisy had married to a rich man Tom Buchanan. In order to redeem Daisy, he did busine illegally and became a millionaire at last.Simply, he did everything just for Daisy. However, he died sadly
because of Daisy in the end.And Nike finally realized the human indifference so he returned to his hometown with a feeling of tragedy after Gatsby's funeral. In my point of view, Gatsby had been having a beautiful dream. He should know that everything had changed especially in that venal time. And this also stands for a common phenomenon that people dreamed for wealth in that time. However, their beautiful American dream ended up in failure. In a word, this book announced not only Gatsby's tragedy but also the sick society. And this was exactly right the writer's purpose of writing.Maybe this is one of the reasons that it became so succeful. It focuses on the themes of contemporary life related with irony and pathos to the legendry of the American dream. However, I think there was still something not convincing, that is Daisy's attitude to Gatsby's death.I believed she always loved him and she can't be so cold.Hemingway once said: F.Scott Fitzgerald was destroyed by women. But we can also realized that the great people are always be destroyed by those who made them succeed.Through this story, I realized that everything will be changing and there won't be anyone always waiting for you.So, maybe we should
choose to give up sometimes. In short, this represents a beautiful broken dream and also a broken American dream!
