Fight for A Forever Belief

It’s one of the longest movies that I have ever watched, lasting for nearly 4 hours, but it is never redundant;it’s one of few war-themed movies that I have ever watched, but it can never be boring. That’s Gone with the Wind, based on the novel Gone with the Wind written by the famous American woman writer Margaret Mitchell. There was a land of cavaliers and cotton fields called the Old South. Before the American Civil War, People there lived with the high strong slaves' songs in the quarters, in security, peace and eternity. They loved the land and dreamed of being together with the land forever, just like Mr.O’hara said to his daughter Scarlett, “Land is the only thing in the world worth working for, worth fighting for and worth dying for, because it’s the only thing that lasts.” However, the terrible war destroyed everything.Lots of southerners alive had to suffer from hunger, poverty and even great desperation. It seemed that there was no hope existing. But actually there was.It was the land.It was the land that encouraged Scarlett, an ever a little skittish, selfish and cowardly girl, to overcome the horror, regain the confidence for life and recover the original prosperity of Tara, a cotton plantation of her family. To me, the movie not only presents a great love story, but also conveys a strong sense of love for the land.Scarlett and her father’s love for the land is the reflection of old aristocratic concept, in a sense, a kind of chivalry.Considering the land as their highest belief, they are willing to die for it.At first, Scarlett didn’t attach much importance to Tara. She was too young at that time to understand her father’s love for Tara.During the Civil War, in Atlanta she witneed a number of injuries and deaths, which raised her thought of going home immediately. No matter what reasons, to escape from the war or to protect her families, she did risk her life going back to Tara. Her family under hunger, poverty and desperation compelled her to burst out swearing, “God as my witne…1

I’ll never be hungry again, no not any of my folk.” From then on, she labored hard on the cotton field on her own and undertook the responsibility to support the family. Moreover, she remarried a man she didn’t love at all and made busine with the northerners in continuation of her struggle for the salvation of Tara, though such behaviors were hardly recognized by the southerners. For Scralett, nothing is more important than protecting the land.Back of her behaviors was her strong belief to hold on to her beloved Tara.At the end of the movie, the death of her good friend Melanie and her daughter Pony heavily hit her heart. When her third husband Rhett decided to leave her, once again, it was still her beloved Tara that gathered her strength to light hope.I believe, if there is a sequel, Scarlett could find Rhett back.Such a strong-minded and smart woman deserves it.The comprehension of Hamlet varies from reader to reader. So does the comprehension of Scarlett. No man is perfect.Though there’re many controversial views about Scarlet, in my mind, her weaknees should be understood and her forever belief for the land should be respected.2
