The review of the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin As for Benjamin Franklin, we all know that he is an all-round person who makes great contributions in many fields. He is not only an outstanding politician and diplomat, but also a preeminent scientist, inventor and writer. As one of the leaders of American Revolution, he helped draft the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.Serving as the first ambaador to France, he was warmly welcomed by the French and wined a high international admiration. In addition, he got great achievements in electricity and meteorology, inventing many things, such as the lighting rod.In terms of writing, his Poor Richard's Almanack sold well at that time for it provided reference for the common’s self-education, let alone the immortal autobiography. The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is divided into four parts, written by Franklin himself at different times. In accordance with the time sequence, the book tells his exploits from obscurity to excellence. It starts from the brief introduction of his grandfather, then comes to the narration of how the writer establish a busine and build a succeful career till the last description of his achievements in human services and scientific experiments. To our regret, Franklin gone without finishing the fourth part.So this autobiography records just until 1757 and we are not lucky enough to listen to his tales of the glorious sunset.January 17th, 1706, Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, North

America. His father, who supported his big family with manufacturing candles and soap, had 17 children and Franklin was the fifteenth boy.Franklin was put to a grammar-school at eight years of age, actually he had began to read before that, it must be much earlier as he said “My early readine in learning to read which must have been very early as I do not remember when I could not read”, but he left school two years later because of the lack of money, returning home to aist his father in his busine.Though his school life was no more than two years, he had never stopped learning. While serving as an apprentice in his brother’s printshop Franklin spared money to buy books from his board wages. At the same time, he got acquainted with a few bookstore apprentices, borrowing books secretly from them and read all through the night so as to return them in time.He was fond of reading and read widely, which gave him a turn of thinking that had an influence on some of the principle future events of his life. For some reasons, he left his brother and at last went to Philadelphia to build up his own busine. There, he started his own career, found his special someone and stepped on the road of public services. In this book, it not only presents the hard struggle of Franklin which will encourage people especially the young to strive for a better tomorrow but also provides detailed methods of behavior oneself which in turn affects adolescents from generation to generation. It is in youth that we

plant our chief habits and prejudices;it is in youth that we take our party as to profeion, pursuit and matrimony. In youth, therefore, the turn is given;in youth the education even of the next generation is given;in youth the private and public character is determined;and the term of life extending but from youth to age, life ought to begin well from youth, and more especially before we take our principle objects. The biography not merely teaches self-education, but the education of a wise man;and the wisest man will receive lights and improve his progre by seeing detailed the conduct of another wise man.By telling the stories of the businemen’s ups and downs, it leads us to think the relationship between succe and morality. All that happened to Franklin is also connected with the detail of manners and situation of a rising people;and in this respect I do think that this writing is a true judge of human nature and society.Deliberating on the major characters and following the succeful ones, it is of importance in improving the features of private character, and consequently of aiding all happine, both public and domestic for it gives a noble rule and example of self-education.Also in this book, it presents a table of the internal circumstances of the country, which gives the readers a good understanding of the formation of America.Believe it or not, history written by a bystander or the authority, the result is not the same.Fortunately, one of the America’s founders wrote part of its history which is a feast for the later generation. Now comes to the writing style, generally speaking, it is logical, rigorous, clear and word-proper.When Franklin was young, once a time while arguing he was born down by the other’s fluency but not the strength of reasons. His father commented that he was far short in

elegance of expreion, in method and in perspicuity and convinced him by several instances.Form then on, he started to imitate the excellent writing and also enlarge his vocabulary by making verses to improve his writing.Just for the sake of his enthusiasm in studying, it is worthwhile to read his writing, not to mention his great achievements. However, to be honest, I don’t find it humorous.Of course, humor is not eential for a good writing, but I hold the idea that it would be better with some humorous elements.Franklin is great, perhaps the way to succe can not be copied, but even not to imitate him intentionally, we can encouraged by his hard-working and excellence-striving so as to improve ourselves as well.I do recommend this book to dear you, especially the young friends. At last, I would like to use the words in the letter from Mr.Abel James to end my writing as nothing would be a more efficacious advertisement than it.“Life is uncertain, as the preacher tells us;and what will the world say if kind, humane, and benevolent Benjamin Franklin should leave his

friends and the world deprived of so pleasing and profitable a work;a work which would be useful and entertaining not only to a few, but also to millions. This writing has on the minds of youth is very great, and has nowhere appeared to me so plain, as in our public friends’ journals. It almost insensibly leads the youth into the revolution of endeavoring to become as good and eminent as the journalist.”
