When it comes to the Lunar New Year,the first word occurred to us may be “China”.As about 1.3billion of people celebrating the spring festival,the Chinese LNY become one of the most remarkable festival in the world as well as Christmas in Western countries.But,it should be streed that the Chinese LNY could not be equal to the LNY.That means,China is not the only country that celebrates this festival.In brief,it is a festival of Asia.According to incomplete statistics,there are 13 Asian countries which set LNY as their public holiday:China,North Korea,Korea,Vietnam,Mongolia,Singapore,Malaysia,Indonesia,Thailand,Burma,Philippines,Brunei and Bhutan.Different countries have their different customs and activities to celebrate the LNY.Take some countries for example below:
Korea:More attention on the New Year’s Eve
In the last few days of the twelfth lunar month,the Korean go back home to reunite with their family,no matter how far they are form home.On the New Year’s Eve,all the restaurants are closed for the entire day.People prepare family reunion dinner by themselves at home.In the evening,all the family members stay up all night to wait for the first sunrise of the new year.It is said superstitiously that one’s eyebrows would become white if he or she broken the role of staying up all night.Vietnam:Eat,drink and be merry in the Golden Week
New Year’s Day in Vietnam is called “Tet Nguyen Dan”.4 days break will given to people ,and sometimes this holiday will meet a weekend.Thus,the 6 days holiday is usually called “the Golden Week”,just like the National Day’s Holiday of China.The LNY starts from December 23 in lunar month,the day of God of the Hearth,and last out the frist month of the lunar new year.The Vietnamese often say that it’s a month of eating and drinking.In the NYE,the Vietnamese set a length of bamboo(with no leaves)in their house.At the top of it hangs a wind-bell and a piece of red colored banner.People think the sound of wind-bell can keep away the evil spirits.They also eat rice dumplings the shape of which look like knolls or cubes to symbolize the heaven and the earth.Japan:Exception?Not really
Japan is not the one of the 13 countries.The Japanese celebrate the New Year’s Day on January 1.However,before 1873,it was observed according to the Chinese lunar calendar.Even though the date of the celebration has changed,the occasion is celebrated with proper Japanese new year traditions.Just as a custom in China,the Japanese give money to kids,too.Lucky money in Japan is called “Otoshidama”.The amount of the money given to kids depends on the age of them.On the New Year’s Day,the Japanese hang a straw rope in front of the entrance of their home to keep away the evil spirits.Green plants and bamboo are used to decorate the house,which signify new life and the honesty to God.At night,people go to the temple to worship,and ring the temple’s bells 108 times to keep away all the evil forces.Each countries has its own customs and activities to observe the LNY,but the original intentions are the same:to bid farewell to the old and usher in the new,to have a family reunion and to pray for a good future.The differences in customs enrich the connotative meaning of this great festival and make it a colorful cultural phenomenon of Asia as well ae the whole world.
