Who was the greatest leader in the 20th century?

With referring to the 20th century, we have innovation, challenge, creation, change and anything unimaginable in our minds, and also cannot forget those great leaders who had devoted themselves into the cause of society progreing and human peace.Among so many excellent great persons all over the world, the public chose three leaders---Churchill, Gandhi and Deng Xiaoping---to make an aement about who was the greatest leader in the 20th century. These three leading figures spread different parts of the world, as we know, Churchill being from Britain-European, Gandhi coming from India-south Asia and Deng Xiaoping rising from China-Asia.The all poe their own charming qualities and admiring abilities of mastering culture, military, and politics, economic and so on.Anyway, the view that I held is very clear that Deng Xiaoping was the greatest leader in the 20th century.First of all, as the greatest leader, one should be highly sensible. He must analyze and control the whole situation on behalf of the nation and people instead of only himself. In this area, there needs not sense. Moreover, one should be a man of learning and genius, so with the knowledge and information one grasped one can make decisions more comprehensively and solve the problems more concretely. In addition, the man has to be of perseverance which is the key to succe in my opinion. On top of that, meeting the demands of his people is the most important factor.Only is he popular with the people, he can become a real leader.Through the following comparison and analyses we may come to the conclusion that Deng Xiaoping was the greatest leader in the 20th century.Every one knows that “Milton Churchill was probably the most popular British minister between 1940 and 1945.”(Dr Paul Addison, 2011)at the dark time, he led the whole nation go out of the desperation and the danger of disappearing from the world, that is, a narrow escape from the complete control of Hitler.Churchill is a man of courage, calmne and responsibility just as Thomas Sowell said in 1999, “He drove out the Nazis in the face of overwhelming odds.” Maybe he was the beast leader who could lead the nation make a succe in the war. However, we can call him a great militarist but not a great leader because that though he did very well in military victory;he could not administrate the country in peaceful time.He lacked the ability of dealing with and handling party politics and some other iues related to the daily living of British, to a large extent due to his arrogance. Therefore, “he lost the general election in 1945.”(Dr Paul Addison, 2011)He situated the war years when he could make the full use of his talent, I think, owing to the fact that when he went back to the peacetime he did not know where to go, and even “without a clear sense or purpose or direction”(Dr Paul Addison, 2011)which fully reveals he was a man of crankine and conceit. He could not satisfy his people and led them live a stable and wealth life after the war.In India, there also existed a great leader who was “honored as the father of Indian Nation”(Mahalakshmi G.S.acceed on 9.5.11);that is Mahadas Karamchard Gandhi. He had always been pursuing peace, non-violence and truth in all his life.“He led the campaign for Indian independence from British.”(Mahalakshmi G.S.acceed on 9.5.11)Gandhi was an enthusiast of peace, justice and high-minded

quality;he developed “Statyagraha based on moral persuasion which promoted non-violence”.Another significant activity he did was that he advocated for the union of India, where Hindus and Muslims lived together whose mixed life began after the Indian independence accomplished. As we al know, religion and belief are magic and can produce superpower in believers’ hearts.Different religions enjoy different dogmas and avoid involvements of any other denominations to aure the religion’s purity. However, Gandhi seemed to be unconscious of the point and insisted the merger of the people belonged to these two denominations. He was too ideal and stubborn, “annoying one of the Hindus fanatics”(Mahalakshmi G.S.acceed on

9.5.11).He did not take consider of the religious followers’ feelings and his idealism intimidated some patriots.Indeed, Gandhi was a little naïve.At last, he was “aainated by a Hindus patriot”

So we can come to the conclusion that to be a popular leader, acquiring countrymen’s buttreing and bolstering is a task of difficulty but of eence. This greatest leader should be sensible as we discued above, focusing on the interests and conflicts of his people’s and poeing the capability to hold the situation rather than making it be a standoff. With considering the situation of 20th century and the definition of the greatest leader, I think Deng Xiaoping should be the best candidate.“Deng Xiaoping’s contribution to current China is decisive and it is unimaginable without him in current China” said the US statesman.(Wang Li, 2004)Undeniable, Deng Xiaoping had “made a decisive difference” for the development of China. He speeded up the “proceeding of good relationship with foreign counties, such as Soviet and the US”(Wang Li, 2004);he paved the way for Chinese in that critical period of China when the whole nation was being the state of transition and confusion. He promoted a series of decision on a comprehensive approach of resolving the crisis, for instance, “insisting upon maintaining China’s socialist system”① while putting his economic policies into practice.Although his actions had been to be right later, he was ever “opposed by university students who demonstrate at Tiananmen Squire”②.He made a good use of his intelligence and boldne in crackling the demonstration down.In fact, his political career was filled with obstacles.Because his arguments and strategy toward economy was inconsistent with Chairman Mao he was unpopular among the political field and exiled to rural and returned back several times.Even though he was forced to leave he did not stopped studying the Chinese status when he was “undergoing re-education”③;“he studied the writing of Mao and Karl Marks”④, whose theories did great contribution to China until now.Deng Xiaoping’s insistence and tolerance adequately expreed the idea---happy medium---of the school of Lao-tzu whose thoughts are eences of Chinese morality and tradition. His behavior, style of working and beautiful qualities finally won the trust and support of the public and his reputation spreads in and out of the country.By the brief introduction and comparison of the three great leaders, Churchill, Gandhi and Deng Xiaoping, I think my point of view has been elaborated clearly.I still regard Deng Xiaoping as the greatest leader in the 20th century. He fits my definition about the greatest leader most.To be frank, the arguments may appear to be

inadequate and immature as those ideas and facts are only of the basis on my own experience and I have just applied a little source outside.I should search for more evidence and information to make the arguments more rich and convincing, for instance consulting senior experts who are proficient in international situation and management, looking up some books or biographies of the three leaders and searching on the Internet to find more accurate and objective words. On the further step, I plan to add some opinions about how to be a great leader in the new century and some expectations for the leaders of 21st century.I am in the hope that all the outstanding leaders should learn the leons drawn from the former leaders’ mistakes and.excellent ways of governing country. Each nation’s leader work independently and cooperate together to meet the special demands of each country and solve the global problems such as economical iues, environmental problems, proliferation and the crowded population, respectively. All human beings should make efforts together to build a sharing, harmonious and wealthy family.①,②,③,④(/De-Du/Deng-Xiaoping.html
