As the APPG’s first AGM and 1-year anniversary approaches, the following document has been developed in order to act as a stocktaking of activities to date, and help guide the APPGs future strategies and aims.The APPG currently has 51 Parliamentarian members within Westminster as well as an extensive supporters’ network externally, numbering some 138 UK experts and interested parties.The APPG will seek to expand this membership, both internally and externally on the launch of its report into Global Food Security and around its upcoming AGM.Inquiry

The APPG's inquiry is in the final stages of preparation before being launched later this year.During the course of the Inquiry into Global Food Security, the APPG received some 130 written submiions as well as hearing from some 30 eminent authorities in person during the oral evidence seions.The experts who provided oral evidence included:

 A Review of DFID's Agricultural Policy;

 Water and Agriculture;

 India and Under-nutrition and;

 DFID White Paper

 DFID and DEFRA’s Research Strategies.During these meetings, the APPG has heard from a number of eminent authorities including:

The APPG's members have been active in several debates focused on the Groups interests.These have included:

 The House of Lords debate on the Contribution of Science, Technology and Engineering to the UK;

 Westminster Hall Debate on UK Aid for North African Countries;

 Westminster Hall Debate on the IDC Report on the UN World Food Programme(2008);

 Westminster Hall Debate Biofuels;

 Westminster Hall Debate on the UK Grocery Market(Regulation);

 House of Commons Debate on Africa;

 Adjournment Debate on The Livestock Industry and Climate Change;

 Adjournment Debate on Energy from Food Waste;

 Westminster Hall Debate on Latin America(inc Land Reform, Food and Biofuels);

 House of Lords Funding Agricultural and Food Research;

 House of Lords Debate on the Queen’s Speech;

 Building our Common Future – A Debate on DFID’s White Paper;

 House of Commons Food, Farming and the Environment and;

 The House of Commons and House of Lords Debate on the Addre – Foreign Affairs and;Agriculture and the

Environment(Queen’s Speech 2008).The APPG hopes to secure an adjournment debate in the coming weeks in the run up to the FAO Food Security Summit.The APPG has tabled one EDM directly-EDM 1984 'ONE BILLION HUNGRY WORLDWIDE' on the 12th October 2009.To date this has received 116 Signatures in the House of Commons.The text is below:

That this House draws attention to the plight of the 1.02 billion people worldwide who suffer from chronic hunger on a daily basis as the 28th UN World Food Day is marked;notes with regret that the economic crisis has pushed some 100 million more people into chronic hunger and poverty in 2009, and continues to do so;re-affirms the UK's commitment to Millennium Development Goal 1 to halve the proportion of people who suffer from chronic hunger by 2015;urges the UK to take a lead at the upcoming UN World Summit on Food Security;and welcomes the forthcoming publication of the report by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Agriculture and Food for Development on the UK's role in tackling global food insecurity.The APPG has also drawn the attention of MPs and external stakeholders to a number of relevant other EDMs for signature.The APPG has made a very encouraging start to its life and has developed firm foundations on which to build and maintain agri-food iues on the national and international agenda in the coming election year and beyond.The Group has developed an excellent relationship with several eminent groupings around this area and it is intended to

develop these relationships with key stakeholders, including DFID, in the coming 12 months.There are a number of encouraging signs which indicate growing interest amongst Parliamentarian and PPC members, however;the election year presents a number of challenges in a field which is clearly not a vote winner.The ring-fencing of International Development is a welcome step.
