Three Gothic Elements Used in The Village to Expre the Theme of Human Evil
A philosopher, Bertrand Ruell, once said that “to overcome the fear is the first step on the road to reason.” The director of The Village, M.Night Shyamalan, also means to deliver this meage in the film. The Village is not a pure horror movie. It exprees the theme of human evil, and leads people to overcome it.These three gothic elements of mysterious atmosphere, an early example of Byronic hero, and emotion in characters and events used in The Village expre the theme well.Mysterious atmosphere is a gothic element running through The Village to expre the theme of human evil.At the beginning, the low howl far away, the repeatedly
mentioned horrible creatures named “Things We Don’t Speak Of,” the forest that is not allowed to be stepped in, and the locked trunks of the elders make the village full of secrets. In the end, it proves that the so-called “Things We Don’t Speak Of” are made up by the elders to scare the young to stay away from the outside world. In these trunks, they contain relics of the elders' relatives and friends, who have died of human evil in the outside world.Mysterious atmosphere exists along the film.An early example of Byronic hero is obvious in this film to expre human evil.He is Lucius Hunt, a man of melancholy, but has rebellious and adventurous spirits.Lucius is curious about the outside world, and wishes to pa through the forest to get medicine for villagers, who have suffered from diseases to die or become disabled. He is sensitive to find that there must be secrets among the elders. However, his wish of changing the
current situation encounters disagreements of the elders. The image of Lucius is contrary to the elders. They are more selfish. In order to keep their oaths, they have deprived their children of rights to enjoy life.Lucius is a typical Byronic hero, a mirror of human evil.Emotion in characters and events is also a strong element to reveal the theme. It is emotion in characters and events that makes viewers feel that living in an isolated village can not avoid human evil. The village in the film has an atmosphere of peace and
harmony superficially, while every corner of the village is actually immersed in tragedy. The solemn funeral in the beginning of the film, the fear to namele creatures hidden in the laughter of youngsters, the cry of Ivy's sister after her courting is refused by Lucius, the forbidden love between Lucius's father and Ivy's mother by custom. Finally, the elders' original intention to establish the Peach Garden falls, when Noah kills Lucius out of jealousne. This tragedy means that the heaven the elders have created is nothing different from the hell of a modern society they had try to escaped from.Human evil is a part of human emotion.Above all, the theme of human evil in The Village is highly expreed by the three Gothic elements of mysterious atmosphere, an early example of Byronic hero, and
emotion in characters and events.Franklin D.Roosevelt once said that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” The best method to overcome fear is to confront it.That is indeed what M.Night Shyamalan wants to expre.
