Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,Today I am very glad to stand here.First, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Hunag Yinhua, and I just graduated from Jiangsu Institute of education. My major is Political and ideological education, so I am a politics teacher in a middle school now.And today the topic of my speech is talking about major traditional Chinese holidays.Like the rest of the world, holidays in China are a time for serious cooking and delighted eating.Grocery markets are well stocked with all kinds of fish and meat. And I suppose that shopping and cooking are the major activities. But in addition to the quantitative and qualitative differences apparent in holiday meals, some special traditional foods and their symbolic significance are indispensable on these occasions.First, I’d like to introduce you the Dragon Boat Festival. The Dragon Boat Festival on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month(around early June)is celebrated in memory of Qu Yuan, an ancient poet and loyal minister who drowned himself while in exile from a corrupt court.Zong zi, a kind of glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, were originally prepared as sacrificial offerings for Qu Yuan’s departed soul and dropping into the river.Today, however, dragon boat races are held during the festival and the zongzi are consumed by the living. For example, there is a famous snack bar in nanchan temple in wuxi. And you can buy nearly all kinds of famous snacks there. Each Dragon Boat Festival, you can see nearly ten different kinds of glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves there. If you are a gourmet and want to taste snacks, I suppose it is a good place. Now, let’s look at the second traditional holiday. It is the mid-autumn day which occurs on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month(around mid-September)is an occasion for viewing the full moon. The round moon is a symbol for completene, and by extension, family reunion. The specialtyof the day is the moon cake which we called yuebing in Chinese. It is a round pastry filled with nuts, candied preserved fruits, bean paste, duck egg yolks, etc.I should say that I like mid-autumn day very much.Because I was born on Mid-autumn day.And due to the market economy , there are more and more moon cake brands on the market. For example , Canso is a famous brand in Wuxi, its snow moon cakes are very popular with the children. And I like moon cake as well. Now, let’s look at the most important traditional Chinese holiday---That is the spring festival. It is the Chinese lunar New year, is celebrated according to the lunar calendar, and generally occurs some time in the first half of February.Customarily, lavishly consuming food and drink is a major activity. In addition to the popular seafood , poultry and meat, regional custom dictates the preparation and consumption of traditional favorites, for example, jiaozi(boiled dumplings)In BeiJing, babaofan(a steamed sweet glutinous rice pudding)in shanghai, and the soup of small rice-balls(cooked with pork and chicken)in Guangzhou.Throughout China, niangao(literally meaning the “year cake ”, a chick steamed pudding of glutinous rice flour)is made in a great variety of shapes and flavors. The character gao in the word niangao is homonymous with the word “high ”, suggesting “growing up and prospering ” in the new year.In my opinion, the Spring Festival is the most popular festival in China. You can see many different customs and each region will hold all kinds of activities to celebrate the new day of the year.Meanwhile, I should say there are still many traditional Chinese holidays in China. If you are interested in them, you can learn more from the book or net. That’s all.Thank you!
