This is a story about a special and unreserved woman who has been exposed to a hostile environment but continuously and fearlely struggling for her ideal life.The story can be interpreted as a symbol of the independent spirit.When the novel begins, Jane is an isolated, powerle ten-year-old living with an aunt and cousins who dislike her.As the novel progrees, she grows in strength.She distinguishes herself at Lowood School because of her hard work and strong intellectual abilities.As a governe at Thornfield, she learns of the pleasures and pains of love through her relationship with Edward Rochester.After being deceived by him, she goes to Marsh End, where she regains her spiritual focus and discovers her own strength when she rejects St.John River’s marriage proposal.By novel’s end she has become a powerful, independent woman, blifully married to the man she loves, Rochester.It is known to us ,even though living at Gateshead, in such a beautiful house with the Reeds, Jane Eyre`s childhood wasn`tfilled with happine.Jane Eyre`s uncle Reed had taken her to his house when her parents both died.On her uncle`s death bed he had made his wife, anut Reed, promise to look after Jane Eyre like her own children, but she didn`t keeping her promise.People thought Mrs Reed was a good woman, becasure they didn`t know how she hate Jane and are cruel to her.Mrs Reed`s attitude made the others change their view to Jane.Her cousins did not love her even bullied and punished her all the time.The servant Beie is the only person who was kind to her.Jane has spent most of her childhood in Gateshead, no other than this special experience shaped her personality of brave and strong to challenge her new life.At Lowood, she was both excited and nervous about the new place she had see and the new people she had meet.Life at Lowood wasn`t good in the beginning.People there must believe in hard work, plain food, simple clothes and no luxury of any kind.So most of them were offishly except Mi Temple, the headmistre of Lowood School.Jane has made a friend here, the first really friend——Helen Burns.The girl was smart and kind-hearted but was hated by her teacher Mi Scatcherd and always be punished because of her “untidy and carele”.Jane was so angry about that, on the contrary Helen told her:“Life is too short to continue hating anyone for a long time.We all have faults, but the time will come soon when we die, when our wickedne will pa away with our bodies, leaving only the pure flame of the spirit.That`s why I never think of revenge, I never consider life unfair.I live in calm, looking forward to the end.”
In Jane Eyre we see elements of the Gothic romance, in that Thornfield Hall and Rochester are described very much in the brigand/castle style BUT Jane Eyre is not abducted by R.On the contrary she chooses to go there of her own free will.And she is clear in her determination to have Rochester as a husband.Neither is there a gentleman rescuer;St John Rivers may look like a Greek God, but he is neither kind nor benevolent;driving Jane back to Ferndean, not rescuing her from it.The trials which the hero is supposed to undergo in a Gothic romance are in fact undergone by the heroine in Jane Eyre.The bandit Rochester is only skin-deep.Underneath the brooding exterior is a sensitive soul, which a WOMAN frees.In this way we see that CB created rather a daring departure from conventional fiction, although there are still many aspects of the novel which remain true to Victorian convention!
