Battle for the Stolen Generation
The stolen generation refers to the tragic original inhabitants in Australia during the beginning of 20th century, when the policy of White Australian Policy prevailed.Nearly one century has paed, how are the lives of those original inhabitants? Does the White Australian Policy achieve its goal?
In 1910, the Australian government promulgated a series of policies with the aim to improve the life of the children from the original inhabitants, in which it provided that the government shall take away any hybrid children anytime when they think appropriate and dispose of them in the child care centre and let them accept the white people’s education, the older hybrid children would be sent to the adoption agencies, while those children in light complexion would be luckily adopted by the white people’s family.However, the members in Human Right Institution and Equal Opportunities Commiion conducted a survey in recent years among nearly 500 victims of these policies for 11months and found that those so-called policies actually cornered the children in inhuman situation in those child care centers and they always encountered sexual harament.The outcome was not as satisfactory as the Australian government first expected, and the profound impacts from these policies left irretrievable pain and shadow to the whole generation of that period.Not until 1970 did these policies be abolished.How to cover the pain and make up the lo of this stolen generation remains a touchy iue in Australia, and so far, all the Australian government has done is just to apologize to the stolen generation, nearly after 40 years since the White Australian
policy has been annulled, and the government still refused to pay the monetary damages for the stolen generation.In my opinion, it is far from enough to cover the pain and the trauma of those innocent people.To thoroughly solve this problem, the priority is to figure out why these policies could exist so many years in Australia and find out the root to fix.All in all, I think the following aspects contributive to this situation.In social aspect, the mindset of the notorious White Australia policies first appeared in 19th century and it became one of the basic state policies in 1901.Under the jurisdiction of this policy, only white people were permitted into Australia, and the aborigines were claified as animal group.The white people deeply believed that there are great differences between races and they have innate superiority to other races.The strong attachment to racism subjected the original inhabitants to those unfair treatments;plus, the original inhabitants only take up 3% population in Australia now.As the minority group with different complexion there, it is inevitable that the aborigines be pushed out even in today’s civilized country.It is urgent that Australia formulate similar anti-discrimination law and put it into effect as soon as poible, not only the stolen generation but also the whole original inhabitants are entitled to enjoy their equal right.As America has similar race segregation in past decades, Australia can learn from America to eliminate the race discrimination step by step.In spite of promulgating anti-discrimination law, the governmental branch exclusively in charge of the aborigines’ affairs should be established.This
governmental branch can offer legal aids for the stolen generation to file lawsuit against those who maltreated or sexual haraed them in the past years, thus to help them get reasonable damages.At the same time, this branch can also deal with the historical problems of the stolen generation.For example, most of the stolen generation got separated with their parents and left their hometown in childhood, one way to ease their pain is to help them find the root of their family.Despite above mentioned, the culture of the original inhabitants should be respected as the aborigines have their own languages and conventions, all of these should be considered as the civilized relic of Australia, then this governmental branch could also focus on the protection of culture and the tragic history of the stolen generation should be kept to warn the Australian offspring of following the same old disastrous road.Moreover, there is increasing cry in domestic Australia to appeal the government to award monetary compensation to the stolen generation, the human right activists can seize this chance to push the government to set up the fund named Stolen Generation, in which the government can grant financial allocation and encourage some philanthropists to donate, then the fund will be used to help the stolen generation in need.In political aspect, the United Nation has paed the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007;however, Australia was one of the only four countries which voted against this declaration.If this declaration could be officially recognized as binding globally, then as one member of the UN, Australia is liable to transform
this international law into domestic law.Otherwise, the UN can put preure on the Australian government;certain sanction could be levied on Australian regarding human right iues if neceary.The iue of stolen generation is never easy and soon to settle down as long as those protection laws unveiled and relevant governmental branch set up.We are waiting for the spring of the stolen generation and give those innocent people justice and respect.
