The Attitude of Life in Walden

Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Maachusetts. He

attended Concord Academy, and went to Harvard. After graduation,he worked in his father’s pencil factory and taught at school for a

short time, and ran a private school for two years. He was a faithful

follower of Emerson with whom he kept a lifelong friendship.Thoreau had a love of thrift inventivene, and the ability to meet

challenges. He insisted that the price for material progre was too

high and therefore simplification was the remedy for the problems in

modern civilization. He became a major voice for the 19th century of

America. His primarily works include Civil Disobedience, A Plea for

John Brown, Walden / Life in the Woods and The Maine Woods.Walden, published in 1854, is now considered one of the

best-selling books in the history of American literature, and its

critical reputation continues to grow as much as its popular

acceptance.Walden describes Thoreau's about two-year life in a cabin near

Walden Pond.He first wrote that a lot of common people were trying

their best to earn money and get their neceary things of life, such as

food, clothes and houses. While, unlike them, Thoreau went to the

woods to build a cabin which cost nearly little money and need little

furniture. After arriving there, he cultivated himself, and tried to live a self-sufficient life without any help from the outside world. Then he began observing Walden Pond, thinking about life, reading some books, and listening to the sound of nature.Thoreau also mentioned that the noise in the town and the whistle of train disturbed the quiet life. However, when he lived in the rather quiet woods, he could enjoy himself to listen to animals' sounds, such as bird's singing, owl’s hooting, and cockerel’s crowing. He lived with animals friendly. It’s his hope to isolate himself from society in order to gain a more objective understanding of it.The author also vividly described the pond in four seasons.Sometimes, when the water was flowing, the pond looked like a huge blue mirror. Then everything was frozen and everywhere your eyesight reached was white and holy.Just like the pure green water, the ice was always green and looked like precious diamond.Thoreau also wrote a lot of beautiful scenery, the woods, the birds, and the hills. In Thoreau’s eyes, Walden Pond was the vitality and tranquility of nature and it can purify people’s soul.People those who came here would be more happy than in any other places. We often make ourselves unhappy by wishing for whatever is not true.If it is hot, we long for winter, and if it is cold, we long for summer.Thoreau shows here his ability to enjoy the weather he is experiencing rather than longing for some other weather.Reading Walden, is just like listening to a wise man’s talking. The words and phrases about the nature especially the Walden Pond

are beautiful and fascinating. The sentences are full of wisdom and philosophy. And it reminds us of those people who work hard to earn money, waste lots of money to buy luxury and expensive things, waste time to entertain themselves. They may easily lose themselves, and though their bodies are full, their minds are empty. The real life is to make every complicate thing to be simple and enrich our heart and soul.In Walden, Thoreau saw nature as a genuine restorative, which has healthy influence on man’s spiritual well-being, and regarded it as a symbol of spirit. As a main resister against the materialism of his day, Thoreau determined to live in the hut, devoting his time to observations and reflections and refusing all the materials from the modern society. He wanted to prove how far he could free himself from the hypocrisies and unneceary complexities of the commercial society. It was his firm belief that ”natural objects and phenomena are the original symbols or types which expre our thoughts and feelings”.The ponds in Walden were beautiful and devine, and the author gave a lot of meanings to it.In Walden, Thoreau wanted to show us such a fact that people can live a simple life and get happier emotions from nature than the industrial world. They should be more friendly to nature rather than pollute it.The harmony between nature and human society was very significant, and effective actions should be taken without hesitation. This book begins with the beautiful and charming

season-----spring, then summer, autumn and winter, on the end, spring comes again, this is just a life cycle, and the end is the starting point when all life begin to recover. It is a quiet, tranquil world which is full of wisdom. The analysis of life, critical attitude of the traditional customs, and the unique opinions of the world impre readers deeply. Many images and scenery portrayed in some articles, are really beautiful and meticulous, transparent like pure water, such as the lush green mountains;some also have reasoning thought, very insightful and enlightening. Here the air is clean, the nature is without environmental pollution caused by industrial society.Reading it, readers will feel the soul of the purity, and get spiritual sublimation.Thoreau talks about a spiritual awakening. The place and time are unimportant, and “the place...is always the same”;that is, not a physical place but a spiritual location.Usually, unimportant and temporary conditions are the events which we allow to cause these moments of awakening. But these conditions are a distraction rather than the spiritual reality itself.Thoreau says that we are closer to our creator than to his creations, a creator who is not someone to talk with but someone who is directing us(The quoted paages are from Confucius).Thoreau’s ideas are much ahead of his time. For half a century after his death, he remained in obscurity;but his reputation rose steadily in the 20th century. His works have been edited, published and reverently commented on.His influence even goes beyond

America. His statue was placed in the Hall of Fame in New York in 1969 alongside those of other great Americans.
