LadiesandGentlemen:I'monlygoingtotalktoyoujustforaminuteorsothisevening,becauseIhavesomeverysadnewsforallofyou--Couldyoulowerthosesig,please?--Ihavesomeverysadnewsforallofyou,and,Ithink,sadnewsforallofourfellowcitize,andpeoplewholovepeaceallovertheworld;andthatisthatMartinLutherKingwahotandwaskilledtonightinMemphis,Teeee.MartinLutherKingdedicatedhislifetoloveandtojusticebetweenfellowhumanbeings.Hediedinthecauseofthateffort.Inthisdifficultday,inthisdifficulttimefortheUnitedStates,it'sperhawelltoaskwhatkindofanationweareandwhatdirectionwewanttomovein.Forthoseofyouwhoareblack-coideringtheevidenceevidentlyisthattherewerewhitepeoplewhowerereoible-youcanbefilledwithbitterne,andwithhatred,andadesireforrevenge.Wecanmoveinthatdirectionasacountry,ingreaterpolarization-blackpeopleamongstblacks,andwhiteamongstwhites,filledwithhatredtowardoneanother.Orwecanmakeaneffort,asMartinLutherKingdid,tounderstandandtocomprehend,andreplacethatviolence,thatstainofbloodshedthathasreadacroourland,withanefforttounderstand,compaionandlove.Forthoseofyouwhoareblackandaretemptedtobefilledwithhatredandmistrustoftheinjusticeofsuchanact,agaitallwhitepeople,IwouldonlysaythatIcanalsofeelinmyownheartthesamekindoffeeling.Ihadamemberofmyfamilykilled,buthewaskilledbyawhiteman.ButwehavetomakeaneffortintheUnitedStates,wehavetomakeanefforttounderstand,togetbeyondtheseratherdifficulttimes.MyfavoritepoetwasAeschylus.Heoncewrote:“Eveninoursleep,painwhichcaotforgetfallsdropbydropupontheheart,until,inourowndeair,agaitourwill,comeswisdomthroughtheawfulgraceofGod.”
