Personal Philosophy as an English Teacher
“Plants are shaped by cultivation and men by education. We are born weak, we need strength;we are born totally unprovided, we need aid;we are born stupid, we need judgment.Everything we do not have at our birth and which we need when we are grown is given us by education.”
(Jean Jacques Roueau, Emile, On Philosophy of Education)
I believe that each student is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which they will grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my goal as a future teacher(in general)to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is comfortable, and invites a sharing of ideas. As an English teacher, the teaching of grammar is a little bit challenging. The world is changing, 21st century students are different compared to the students before.Students nowadays want to learn by their own and by sharing their ideas, not by following teacher’s commands.Traditionally, grammar rules can be presented as rules with a focus on form. This involves a lot memorization(rote learning), this kind of teaching is strict.Tendency is that students can do the grammar exercises, but they apply it well if they want to say something for themselves.I want to make my claroom atmosphere as engaging as poible.I want my students to enjoy grammar more.I know most of them don’t like rules very much.I will provide activities that will get their attention.I will always remember that many students are grateful to be in a cla where they feel as though they are part of a family, where relationships are based on respect for one another, and where everybody's ideas are listened to and discued equally.Another thing is that as a future teacher, I should be innovative. While many teachers find it easiest to remain using textbooks, I will try my best to strive hard in order to find innovative ways of teaching that addre the diverse needs of all of my students.
