The Reading Report of A Tale of Two Cities
Charles Dickens(1812-1870), the writer of A Tale of Two Cities, a distinguished novelist in Britain literature, is the main representative of realism in 19th century.In his childhood, his family suffered from the poverty.Therefore, he had to discontinue his education.Unfortunately, he was forced by life to work as a child laborer in a factory.He had worked as a clerk in a law firm and later as a newspaper reporter.At the age of 18, he read the works of William Shakespeare and other English writers with great interest.Dickens used the pen name Boz early in his career, and his first publication was the short story collection Sketches By Boz.His other famous works were Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Little Dorrit, Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol.When Dickens was died, he was buried in the Poet’s Corner in London and there was a sentence caved on his grave: “by his death one of England’s greatest writers is lost to the world.” As for his feature of writing, it could be owed to his experiences of life.He saw through completely the extreme disparity between the extravagant upper cla and the struggling lower cla.His novels offers a most complete and realistic picture of the English Bourgeois society in 19th century.His work is full of humors, vivid description with details and romance.The content is largely about the people who live at the bottom of the society, but there is often a happy ending.A Tale of Two City was set in the revolution of France.Dr.Manette was put into prison because he knew the Marquis St.Evremonde brothers’ crime that they ripped Madame Defarge, farm women originally and killed her brother.After 18 years’ imprisonment, the doctor’s daughter, Lucie, took him to England and began a new life.During the time in England, Lucie fell in love with Charles Darnay who was the son of the Marquis.Hoping that his daughter can be happy, however, Dr.Mannette agreed the marriage.When the Revolution in broke out, Darney tried to save his
servant Gabelle, but his was sued by the local people.Dr.Mannet braced himself up and tried to save him.At length, Sydney Carton, who adored Lucia, sacrificed his own life to save her husband and the whole family of Mannet went back England safely.“Two cities” in the title of the novel refers to France and England.Dickens utilized the background of the French Revolution to tell his uneasine of society of England, because England had the same problems at that time.The noble family in France was cruel and they don not pay much attention to the people’s life.They even collected the heavy tax on their people.People suffered from poverty and famine, while the noble family lived in a luxurious life and regard his people’s lives as nothing.All of these arouse the indignation from the bottom of people’s hearts.The revolution broke out.However the revolution itself became a disaster.People lost their mind, filled with enmity and revenge.Except punishing the noble people who were guilty, they killed innocent people as well, even children, which is extremely criticized by Dickens.He urged England to realize the creasing conflict in the society and find a solution to it.The writing of characteristics
The way Dickens uses makes the whole novel mysterious and tortuous with a tight structure.Dickens prefers to use environmental description and description on plot to create the atmosphere.When Lucy went to France to take her father, writer used more words to describe where the Dr.Mannet lived.It is depreing ,which made peoplenot breathe and think how the terrible experience the doctor had.Besides, the place belong to France, so it also indicated that the life in France was not so good.Another example is the scene in the town: some men kneel down ,made scoops of two hands joined.The wine was spilled,and everyone rush to drink.No matter men and women, they do not care their image any more.They even wanted to dig the earth so that they will not lose any drops of the wine.The description exactly exprees the degree of the poverty in the street and it is easier for people to imagine.The most mysterious one is the death of the Marquis.Instead of speaking out the Marquis's death directly, the writer just uses the words to describe——“It was like a fine mask, suddenly
startled, made angry, and petrified.Driven into the heart of the stone figure attached to it ,was a knife.”
Besides, making suspense sets, foreshadow, and flashback are another features of this novel.At the first, Madam Defare often kept waving without any words,cold and ruthle.The way she looked at people make people felt frightened.All these make people curious about why she had to do that, but later writer explains it for us——she was responsible to record the crimes her enemy had done.Darney and Carton are alike, which prepares for Carton sacrificing hielf for saving Darney in the end.As for the flashback, the novel starts with the fact that Dr.Mannet become abnormal, and the following events happens as the time order.When the plot approaches to the fact, Dickens begins to presented the thing which happened in the eighteen years ago, which can explain the reason of Dr, Mannet being mad sometimes.I think the symbols is used by Dickens as well.The bottle filled with red wine was broken, which symbolizes the revolution would break out.When the Marquis went back to the town, the setting sun reddened the sky ,which means the ending of the noble family.In the one of the last chapters, there was a man, in the shop,sawing the wood, which stands for cutting people's head.Interestingly, the most meaningful symbol is Dr.Mannet which is the representative of humanism.In order to expre the image, doctor is a best occupation, because the duty of every doctor is saving people's lives, which in eence reflects the humanism.Humanism
The thought of humanism runs through the all novel and it is the idea the writer wants to transmiion to us.To spread the spirit, in my opinion, the writer divides the characters into three groups---the noble families, the middle cla, and the people from the bottom of the society.Marquis, who is lack of humanity is indifferent to his killing a child by mistake and he just drops only one cion to compensate what he have done.He treats the life as nothing.The upper cla collect the taxes on people and lives in a luxurious life, while people are suffering from poverty and famine.These behaves are severely criticized by the author.Therefore, it is evident to predict that
people must fired up.The status of the noble families is declining with lacking humanity.As the time goes on, they will lose the support of their people and end up with a revolution.People dominated by Dr.Mannnet impre me most.I think the most important factor of charactering them is the kindne and forgivene.The love to daughter conquers the Dr.Mannet's enmity to Marquis St.Evremonde brothers who is the elder of Darney.He knows his tragedy should not be owed to Darney and he goes through the diversity by himself.When Darney is in danger he pulls himself up and saves Darney.Compared with Dr.Mannet, Madam Defare seems to be more cruel.As a member of a lower cla, she should have been sympathized by people.Neverthele, with the outburst of the revolution, her heart is full of revenge.She punished the guilty, and murdered the innocent: the old, the women and even children.It can be said that she have lost her mind and her is no le than the noble family who are not humane.If there is a little humanity exist in the bottom of Madam Defare's heart, the sanguinary scene would not happen.Through reading the novel, the most important thing, we need to do, I think, is to understand the figures in the plots, because different figures have different personalities and from the personalities, we can predict what kind of things he or her will do.The novels can reflect the life of a era.They can tell me the truth, they can transmiion the kindne and even can teach me a leon.The humanity in this novel should be remained in everybody heart.To be merciful can cure people's heart and help people unload some unneceary burden, hence a peaceful life.If no so, the heart will be overweight, just like Madam Defare is driven to be crazy by the revenge.In fact, she is not happy for avenging her brother and her heart have been sallowed by slaughter.Most unfortunately, she died of the enmity, usele and pointle.
