A review of seven pounds
Depreed music, gloomy scenes and unknown plots in the first 10 minutes within the film totally attracted me.If not told something information of the film beforehand, I would rather thought it was thriller for the flashbacks of Ben were so breathle and inexplicable.Much as attracted by the film at the beginning.I found myself hardly like it after having finished the whole moving but artificial story. The story is told in a non-linear and seemingly haphazard order, which usually confe or confounds as a way to hide a „twist‟ until the last 1 minute of the movie. The filmmaker makes a succe of producing a twist ending and gaining much attention of the audiences, but fails in holding people‟s interest all the time.one doesn‟t have to divine the film‟s ultimate trajectory with its first 30minutes especially since the movie open with one of the final scenes, but the director force me to do that. And come to consequences that I was confused by the lead character, who is he, what does he want, why is he behaving so oddly, and almost lost my interest of the film. The lead character(by Will Thomas)was once leader of Aeronautics company--Apogee, which can be indicated from Ben‟s flashbacks. He survived a car accident.Unfortunately, his wife died as well as the other six people.Bearing guilt in mind, Ben walked on a way to self-redemption.And the film slowly presents its plots circling on that central theme. There are a lot of things in seven pounds that feel artificial, but the affection between Ben and Emily seems quite genuine. They‟re both deeply wounded in their
own ways and that adds to the intensity of their scenes together. The tender love gives both the strength to go on their lives.Ben would have to cancel his plan to commit suicide to stay with Emily forever. But Emily is on a transplant waiting list with a rare blood type and chances for her long-term survival aren‟t good. When Ben was ringed by the hospital and told Emily‟s bad health, his beautiful love dream ruined. He didn‟t hesitate any more, and called his friend “it‟s time now”.Tears flowed from his eyes, so did mine. It‟s a heartbreaking moment.Reality is always crucial. It‟s the most memorable scene that I can‟t ever forget.Ben was running in a heavy dark night, with the cold rain and warm tears mixing together. He showed his weakne to death although he had have prepared well and for a long time.He was also a man of flesh and blood and he had pains and agonies as we did.We would never experience how desperate as he did.The final scene, Ben laid in his bathtub, watching the beautiful and poisonous jellyfish biting him and struggling.Only a few minutes he died but it was the longest time in his life.I wept several times and I have to admit this is a moving film.I understand Ben but I absolutely don‟t support his behavior of commit suicide.Seven pounds raises a legitimate questions about the lengths to which it is reasonable for someone to go achieve redemption. Are some sins so grave that they can never be expunged? Can guilt and pain be confused and does the alleviation of one lead to a release from the other? I believe the director intended to make a spiritual and uplifting motion picture, but I found it to be uncomfortable and depreion. While it may make viewer cry, it
doesn‟t achieve its loftier aims. This film remembered me of another film that related to redemption—the Shawshank Redemption, which describe a man to regain the freedom and future in a prison. In America, most people have religious beliefs, and they tend to have a confeion when they feel that they have done something wrong. It‟s a big different from China.American People cherished sense of shame and their behaviors are restricted by social mores and religious beliefs, which is the reason that American people are kinder and more sincere than Chinese.
