An Analysis on Goodne in Oliver Twist

-----A Literature Review Abstract: Charles Dickens was the greatest representative of English critical realism in the nineteenth century.Oliver Twist was Dickens‟s second novel, which marked the beginning of Dickens‟s literary life.Oliver Twist is known for well-portrayed characters--dozes of good and evil characters.Every one who read this novel must believe that goodne exists in our world. Many scholars and expects have done many researches and given a lot of comments on this topic, I will make a summary of it.Keywords: Charles Dickens Oliver Twist Oliver Twist Mr Brownlow Mrs Maylie

Mi Rose Nancy Ⅰ.Introduction

“Oliver Twist himself is born in a workhouse and treated cruelly there. The story follows Oliver as he escapes the workhouse and runs away to London. Here he receives an education in villainy from the criminal gang of Fagin that includes the brutal thief Bill Sikes, the famous artful Dodger and Nancy, Bill Kites.Oliver is rescued by the intervention of a benefactor-Mr Brownlow, but the mysterious Monks gets the gang to kidnap the boy again.Nancy intervenes but is murdered viciously by Sikes after she has showed some redeeming qualities and has discovered Monk sinister intention. The story closes happily and with justice for Bumble and the cruel Monks who has hidden the truth of Oliver parentage out of malice.”1 Every one who read this novel must be impreed on the goodne of Oliver and goodne that good guys like Mr Brownlow, Mrs Maylie.Mi Rose, Nancy, shows to Oliver.Ⅱ.Goodne in Oliver Twist 2.1Goodne of Oliver Twist

ⅰ.Oliver‟s Innocent Face

“Instead of the evil-looking robber they(Mrs Maylie and Mi Rose)expected to see, the two ladies find only a pale, thin child, lying peacefully asleep”.2p128 “He looks so innocent that Mrs Maylie says, „This child could never have been in a gang of robbers!‟” 2p128 “Upon seeing Oliver Mi Rose explains that he cannot poibly be a burglar unle older evil men have forced him into trade, she begs her aunt not to send the child to prison.”

3p111 “Oliver‟s face suggests external appearance usually

pgive a fair impreion of a person‟s inner character.” 347

ⅱ.Oliver‟s Polite Behaviors

“Oliver is shocked and horrified when he sees the Artful Dodger and Charley Bates pick a stranger‟s pocket and again when he is forced to participate in a burglary.pOliver‟s moral scruples about the sanctity of property seem inborn in him.” 329

“Other pauper children use rough cockney slang like „scragged‟, „rum dog‟, „peaching‟, but Oliver does not understand what such expreions mean.He himself speaks in proper King‟s English: „I would rather go‟, „you‟re one, are you not?‟ It

pseems that Oliver‟ speech is a symptom of his innate moral goodne.” 397 All of those statements suggest that “Tough treated with cruelty and surrounded by coarsene for most of his life, he is a pious, innocent child, and his charms draw the

pattention of several wealthy benefactors.” 315

2.2.Goodne that good guys show to Oliver Twist ⅰ.Mr Brownlow‟s Goodne

Mr Brownlow is “A well-off, erudite gentleman who serves as Oliver‟s pbenefactor.” 317 “Pitying the sickly young Oliver, Mr Brownlow takes him into a pcoach and drives away(to his home).” 375 “Brownlow purchases an expensive pnew suit and new shoes, and Oliver‟s dirty old clothes were given away.” 276 At last, Mr Brownlow, with his wise, captures monks and helps Oliver find his identity.“Mr Brownlow adopts Oliver as his son and takes up residence near house of Mr Maylies” 5p179

ⅱ.Mrs Maylie and Mi Rose‟s Goodne

pMrs Maylie is a kind, wealthy older woman, is the adoptive aunt of Rose.” 319 “Mi Rose is a beautiful, compaionate and forgiving young woman.”3p17 “Oliver, as one of burglar to rob Mrs Maylie‟ house, Mrs Maylie and Mi Rose does not sent him into prison, instead of taking good care of him, then take him to countryside”3p115and they live a happy countryside life.ⅲ.Nancy’s Goodne

After she brings Oliver back to Fagin‟s fold, "Cries Nancy wildly, „Now you‟ve got the boy, you‟ll turn him into a thief and a liar.Isn‟t that enough, without kill him ptoo?‟” 286 “Her outburst against Sikes and Fagin for seizing and mistreating pOliver demonstrates her deep and paionate sense of morality.” 389 “Nancy has conflicts between her inner conscience and her devotion to Sikes.Ultimately, she risks her life to help Oliver, which commits one of the most the noble acts of kindne in pthe novel.” 315

Ⅲ.Conclusion “A major concern of Oliver Twist is the question of whether or not a bad environment can irrevocably poison someone‟s character and soul.”

3P31 By examining the fates of most of the characters, Bad guys like Fagin, Bill Sikes and Monks have dad fates in the end, good guys like Oliver Twist, Mr Brownlow, Mrs Maylie, Mi Rose enjoy a bliful fairy-tale ending, we can aume that the answer is No.The incorruptibility of basic goodne, no matter how many environmental obstacles we‟ll face, exists in the world.“That general purpose was clear in Dickens‟ mind was evident from his later-written preface: „I wished to show, in little Oliver, the principle of good surviving through every adverse circumstance and triumphing at last‟”4.In a word, “even when people are born into squalid conditions, they can appreciate goodne and morality.”3Reference Books: [1].http://zhidao.baidu.com/
