Good morning, all the honorable judges.I am Zhang Sha and my supervisor is profeor Ha.With his sincere and intellectual guidance, I have finished my paper.Now, I will present my efforts to you and gratefully welcome any correction.The title of my paper is An Analysis of Helen's Love from the Perspective of Postmodernism.I choose this as my topic due to the following reasons.Women is not the center in Hemingway's works, but it produces the immeasurable influence on male-centered image.The Snows of Kilimanjaro was one of Hemingway’s most excellent short stories.In this novel, the male and female protagonist's attitude toward love and their pursue are completely different under the turbulent history background.Helen is a gentle and selfle given women but harry is numb and cruel.This paper analyzed with the postmodernism to explore woman's liberation from the social and cultural level.Let the readers have a more profound understanding and thinking to Helen and the life of the “lost generation” , which encourage us to think over the attitude towards love and explore the woman’s future.There were many scholars researching the novel The Snows of Kilimanjaro both at home and abroad.From the domestic and foreign research , most scholars explore the narrative skills, symbolism and death track of the story.There is almost no scholars consider Helen as the breakthrough point, thus their analysis are not revealing and difficult for us to grasp the rich connotation and meaning of the whole story.This eay was started by postmodernism theory to try to find out what Helen’s notion of love was and the reasons.First, by reading through Ernest Hemingway's The Snows of Kilimanjaro for many times, I had a profound understanding to Helen.Then by reading Hemingway's autobiography, I had a roughly understanding of the writer's life and creation background.Third, by reading foreign literature and the 20th century western literary theory, I learned some related theories about postmodernism.Finally, I read some related journals about the previous research and my innovations was decided.According to the previous study on the novel, here in this paper, combined with the author’s writing background, it explores a chief in The Snows of Kilimanjaro with postmodernism theory.And then the analysis part is the highlighted body of the thesis.First, Helen’s attitude of love is introduced according to Helen and her husband’s dialogue and Harry’s inner-monologue after his injury.And second it elaborates with the two factors which lead to Helen’s notion of love.Finally, according to the analysis above, I reach a conclusion: First, Helen’s attitude toward love is sincere and precious but also unwise, blind and perplexed.Second, it is the external factors and the internal factors which lead to the production of Helen's love.Third, Helen's love tragedy remind us to seek self-liberation and independence and think over the attitude towards love.That's all.Thank you!
