My Ideas of Great Expectations Having gone through a lot since childhood, the author Charles Dickens had a deeper cognition from people, environment and life, which can be seen in his every book.Great Expectations is one of his most succeful works that I like its plots and characters very much.On one hand, the plots are developed according to the growing up and changing of the main character Pip.The book is full of quirks from the very beginning to the end.Pip was an orphan, living with his crud sister and friendly brother-in-law who prepared a plain and sustainable road for Pip.At first, Pip was quite satisfied, but later two events changed his pursue and fate as well.One was he saved a prisoner Mel Magwith who later helped him, and another was that he fell in love with Mi Havisham whose beauty and arrogance made him aspiring to be a gentleman.Receiving a fund of wealth from an unknown source, his “great expectations” came true though regretting for it in the end.After considering himself seriously, he picked up his good virtues again and started a new life.In fact, the “great expectations” is ironic.The subject of this novel is focused on the story of Pip’s ambition to be a gentleman at any cost and finally disillusioned.The author teased at those who had this kind of mentalities in eence.In our real life, many people run after something blindly, such as wealth and fame, without realizing what they lose actually.There is no doubt that everyone has dreams, but one should have clear mind that what they really want to achieve.People should not be cheated by apparent phenomenon, but see clearly the truth hidden the cover.One the other hand, the book is remarkable for its many indelible and complex characters;anyhow the author put the potential for good in everyone, as he always wished and did.The following examples can explain my opinions.After fortunately or unfortunately receiving amount of money, Pip came to London and spent a lot of money to eat and play.As a result, he became selfish and liked to show off.But he still helped his friend Herbert to investigate his company.Besides, after he knew that it was the prisoner that helped him to be a gentleman, he took it as his duty to try his best to find him a safe place.Mi Havisham who was abandoned adopted Estella and educated her to break men’s heart.But later she realized Pip’s great sufferings she gave him and felt quite regretful.Finally she could not bear the inner torture and died.As for Estella, she was completely the victim of Havisham , for which she was made to torture his adorers in romance.She was like a beautiful demon, which was doomed to lose her own happine.But at last, she was conscious of Pip’s profound love to her, and realized there was a place for him in her heart as well.In addition to, she wished God would ble and forgive her, for she was eager to win Pip’s friendship again.Actually she was the only daughter of Mr.Magwitch, which made the story more complicated and interesting.Finishing reading this book, I was deeply moved by the beauty of the plots, people’s personalities and plain but beautiful expreions.As we see, the main characters had a beautiful and smooth future, as the author usually used happy endings to finish his stories in other works.In my opinion, the book is really worth reading, and can be remembered in mind for years.英语师范072
