Education in the United States

Most Americans start school at the age of five when they enter kindergarten.Children do not really study at this time. They only attend for half the day and learn what school is like.Children attend elementary school for the next six years. They learn to read and write and work with numbers. They also study the world and its people. After they leave elementary school, children go to junior high school for three years and senior high school for another three years. This is called secondary education. In some places the children go to elementary school for eight years and high school for four.At any rate, elementary and secondary education together takes twelve years to complete, excluding kindergarten. In their secondary education children get more advanced knowledge and begin to concentrate on their special interests. They usually study further in history, geography, government and English language and literature. They may choose to study foreign languages, advanced mathematics or science, such as physics or chemistry.Students who plan to go on to college or profeional training must take some of these courses in order to enter college.Other students who do not intend to go on with school may take claes in computing or typing or other subjects that will help them in the busine world. Some senior high schools are vocational.Boys may learn to operate machines or do other work.Girls may learn cooking, sewing or office work.Public schools are free to all boys and girls, but some parents prefer to send their children to private schools. Some private schools are connected with churches, and children receive religious instruction as well as their regular studies.Other private schools are not religious, but have small claes and very good teachers so that parents think their children will get a better education there than in the larger claes of the public schools. These private schools do not receive any tax money, so most of them must charge the students several hundred dollars a year to pay for the cost of the school.Boys and girls attend the public schools together, but many private schools are for girls only or for boys only.Higher education is given in colleges and universities. The average course is four years.Students choose a “major” subject and take many courses in this subject. After four years, they get a bachelor's degree. Then the students may go on to graduate school and with a year or two of further study get a master's degree. After another year or two of study and research, they may get a higher degree as doctor of philosophy.Higher education trains people to become teachers, nurses, engineers, dentists or do other profeional work.Lawyers and doctors must go to school longer than four years. Most states have universities that do not charge much money to residents of that state because public taxes help pay the cost of the university.A)从短文中找出与下面的词语意思相当或意思上符合下面释义的单词。

US High School Lives

In US high schools, there is often as much interest in other students as there is in school subjects. You can see this when you look at a typical high school yearbook, there is a picture of every teacher and student.Other photos show teachers and students at football and basketball games, in cla, at club meetings, or at school.Choosing leaders is a large part of high school life. The children decide which students should help direct school busine and lead them in the Student Council. The council is usually a group of five or six students who talk to the school administrators and teachers about what happens at school.About once a month, some of the Student Council leaders go to a meeting of the PTSA(Parent Teacher Student Aociation). There they work with parents and teachers to make their school better. For many students in US high schools, the important things in their lives are making friends, being popular, and having a good social life. Many students go out together after school---to fast food restaurants, movies, or dances. One big social event that takes place in high schools is the “prom,”(from the word promenade;originally French for “to walk”)or school dance. The students go to the prom in couples. The boys wear “tuxedos” and the girls wear beautiful drees.During the high school years, students make strong friendships. They remember high school friends and other students long after they have finished school. So every 10 years or so, they all meet up again. They have a special party called a “cla reunion”.With others from their graduating cla and all the students who finished school the same year.At that big cla party, the students look at old yearbook photos and talk about what happened at school and what has happened since then. They often remember the high school years as the best years of their lives.C)根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
