I have made contact with many old people. Some of them have become my good friends. When we meet, we are able to ramble on/ chat away about everything on earth.Through talking with these old people, I have got the feeling that they are often worried about their being idle. These old people have a terrible amount of idle time yet few opportunities to make contact with the outside world. They are often forgotten by their busy younger generation. At home, young people may talk enthusiastically and endlely with their friends and colleagues, while leaving the elders alone.Sometimes, old people will chip in/ cut in by saying a few words, only to be scolded impolitely.Young people don't understand that the elders like a lively and exciting atmosphere in the home. They don't understand the sadne old people feel towards the cold and indifferent attitude of the young.3

At this time, the sound of the tide got louder. There was a thread of silver on the far horizon, sometimes turning black, then becoming silver again.By and by it drew nearer coming from afar as if could topple the mountains and overturn the seas.In the still of the night, sounds really sound louder than in the day time.It roared like a powerful army with thousands of

men and horses, so loud that people could not hear each other talking even if they stood face to face.I was not sure if this was my imagination or a real feeling. The night tide waves were high and orderly in alignment. When they reached the foot of Zhenhai Pagoda, the waves came in a straight line, so straight and orderly that it seemed like an army under review. After the tide paed by, people refused to leave, continuing to look our at the tide until it ran rapidly out.Suddenly a line of signal lamps on the other side of the Qiantang River were turned on.The night tide is truly more fantastic than the day tide.According to legend, the compa vehicle was invented by the Yellow Emperor. It was first formally recorded in the Han Dynasty, and it is an outstanding example of ancient Chinese science and technology. The compa vehicle has always been widely valued by scholars both in China and abroad. It is a pity that there has not been a single compa vehicle handed down to us in history.People, however, have studied its structure and principles and restored it according to various historical data. Many well-known Chinese scholars have been devoted to such work.In the 1930s Mr.Wang Zhenduo worked on a model for the compa vehicle. In the 1950s, another model was made by the Chinese History Museum under his direction.Abroad, eays on the compa vehicle were published in Britain dating back to the 1920s.A model was also produced by the British Museum.6

When we stayed in Taiwan for an exchange program, despite the tight schedule, we visited many places, meeting old friends and making new ones.At every get-together, one important topic was how to make China powerful and prosperous in the 21st century.Though young people on the Mainland and in Taiwan live in different social environments and have varied life experiences, the fine tradition of the Chinese culture is deeply imprinted in their innermost hearts, and they cherish the same ideal of rejuvenating the Chinese nation. In this great cro-century epoch, as our motherland is becoming more prosperous and powerful, people acro the Straits will strengthen exchanges, and work together to bring about an earlier reunification of their motherland. The precious opportunities and tremendous challenges at the turn of the century have pushed young people to historic forefront. With what attitude will the cro-century young generation meet the new century that promises so much hope? That is the question we must answer.9

Shanghai in modern times was a metropolis infested with foreign adventurers. After the port city opened to foreigners, it undeniably witneed a history of blood and tears, bitterne and inequality. There was also, undoubtedly, filth and mire.It was known as the “Paradise of

Adventurers”.There were opium-takers, harlots and gamesters. All these induced people to wallow in luxury and even degeneracy. There was, however, another facet to modern Shanghai. It was vigorous, intelligent, creative and enterprising. Not afraid of running risks, it had the awarene and mechanism of competition. The city, with an awarene of competition and a style of its own, inspired its people to catch up with the times and make progre.
