Chinese Views on Wealth
With China being a member of WTO, its economy has experienced a flourishing decade. As people are becoming more affluent, their attitudes toward wealth are no longer the same.Based on their views on wealth, Chinese people can be roughly grouped into three categories, namely “money fanatics”,“money beholders” and “money conservatives”.“Money fanatics” refer to those who idolize money and regard it as almighty. They try every poible means to hoard wealth. They like to indulge in the enjoyment and convenience brought by high technology.Young people are often reduced to slaves of money, since they have a desire for luxuries. In pursuit of fames, boys and girls throw themselves to the entertainment industry, acquiescing in the “unwritten rules”, which accounts for the reason why there are so many filthy dealings in this industry. Those youngsters do not necearily sacrifice their chastity so as to obtain an opportunity that may lead them to fame and fortune. What they do is not out of their responsibility to support their family, but out of their vanity.Another case in point is talent shows, in which champions can win lucrative contracts.Admittedly, there are some talented people changing their lives by virtue of the competition, but not everyone can be that lucky.A great number of teenagers, unfortunately, would rather abandon their education than mi the chance of being a participant.Wealth for them is more important than anything else.Their beliefs, in this sense, are often wrong and values skewed.Their blind pursuit is nothing but an illusion.Happine can neither be bought nor be measured by money. It can only be gained through dedication and hard work.“Money beholders” can be understood as middle-cla people in our society.Their views on wealth are neutral. They need money to live by, but never are they fettered by it.Money is only one of the tools that help them live in the world.Their happine comes from both materials and spirits. When they have money, they spend it properly and frugally.Seldom do they waste it on superfluous things. When their money is insufficient, but at least they can afford their daily neceities, they will simply accept it.As long as they feel satisfied with their lives, they will not be in a hurry to seek wealth.Peace and stability of life, to them, are most invaluable. They are reluctant to give up their way of life in order to be superrich.Fortunately, the majority of Chinese people belong to this group.“Money conservatives” mean those people who do not care much about wealth.Farmers constitute mostly in this group. They have inherited Chinese traditional ideas about wealth. They sow, cultivate and harvest.Land supplies them with almost everything needed.Electronic gadgets and fashionable clothes are thus not attractive. What makes them joyful is the fresh air in the fields, melodic chirping of birds and all comforts and wonders provided by nature. They prefer to live a tranquil life in the countryside, without being disturbed by the hustle and bustle of a city.Their definition of wealth is different from that of an urban citizen.Wealth, in their eyes, is not the ability to purchase, but the ability to appreciate whatever Mother Nature bestows on us.Sadly, fewer and fewer people adopt this kind of life style. This kind of people are facing the danger of extinction.Chinese people are deeply influenced by western culture, of which consumerism is the predominant aspect.Consumerism is caused by avarice which is often taken advantage of by some sly businemen to manipulate people's behaviors.Once the wrong conception of consumption is established, people will not stop chasing money. Thanks to the fact that most people remain reasonable when temptations appear, our domestic market is still stable.(By the way, our government's efforts in achieving that can also not be neglected.)It is hard to imagine the consequences, when human beings begin to fear that our natural resources are not enough to meet everyone's need.It is high time we got rid of the negative influence of western thoughts. We, Chinese people, should preserve our original values on wealth.翻译大比拼
