Abstract It’s no doubtful that the Opening Ceremonies of Beijing and London Olympic Game are cultural shock of the East and the West.Although the two Opening Ceremonies are succeful, the patterns of manifestations are different.In London, the Opening Ceremony was supposed to be claic, pragmatic and in details, And it full of British touch, country style and cultural deposits, which showing the historical and cultural changes of England.But in Beijing, it mainly showed the Chinese traditional culture, which refers to poetry and painting, juste-milieu, and the idea of “the sea refuses no river”.After watching Beijing Opening Ceremony, a grand picture came to everyone’s eyes that are “Friends from afar have joy”.And Chinese traditional virtues are very creative, artistic and ornamental.The two succeful Opening Ceremonies both showed their historical developments and cultural imageries.But there are still differences.All these different, mainly because of the different ideologies and cultures of the two countries.This thesis will use the time, the traditional thoughts and the Olympic slogans as clues which can from another point of view to see the differences of the twos.08年的北京奥运会开幕式和12年的伦敦奥运会开幕式无疑是一场中西文化的对碰。两届奥运会开幕式都是成功的，只是表现形式不同。伦敦奥运会开幕式讲求的是经典，重实效，讲细节，比较朴实温馨，极具英伦风情，田园风格，文化底蕴和人文气息，展现了英格兰的历史文化变迁。北京奥运会开幕式则主要体现了中华民族优秀传统文化，琴棋书画，中庸之道，海纳百川，向世界展示了一个“有朋自远方来不亦乐乎”的画面。中华民族热情好客的传统美德，极具创意性，艺术性和观赏性

I Introduction The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece(776BC), and due to held in Olympia named.It has gone through the initiation, flourished(BC 776146 BC), the demise(146 BCAD 1896)five stages, which has witneed the historic moments.Now, Olympics have become a symbol of peace and friendship.It is a kind of integration in the sports, education, culture, so it is a comprehensive, sustained and global activity.Olympic is a human event.And it is not only a sports arena, but also the distribution center of the culture of the world.Due to the London Olympic Games just finished, the researches about the two ceremonies are still few, and the related books or materials are few too.This diertation consists of six chapters.Chapter one introduces the research topic.Chapter two reviews the general cultural background of Eastern and Western.From chapter three to five, the author use 3 methodologies(Inductive, Comparative method and logical analysis)to compare the differences of the two opening ceremonies in time clues, traditional ideologies and Olympic slogans.Finally, in Chapter six conclusions are made upon the major findings.II The background of Chinese and western culture Ideology can be understood as the comprehension of imagination, it is also a kind of way to observe things.The ideology is the basics;it reflects the economic relations and political relationships among human beings.With the development of the economy, the political thoughts, arts, moralities, religions, and other social sciences reflect real life from different aspects.The two Opening Ceremonies which under the guidance of different ideologies show the different cultures and styles to people.The profound Chinese traditional culture that is inclusive and different is the national crystallization of thousands civilization and history.Confucianism is the main thought to guide Opening Ceremony to make it unity, humanity and collaboration.Britain was claimed “the empire in which the sun never sets”, and it has become the “factory of the world” after the Industrial Revolution.Because of her national “British manners”, the ceremony presented in London presented a kind of relaxed and personality feelings.The two Opening Ceremonies have no unified style.And each of them blends with the host country’s culture to form its unique spectacle.III The time clues reflect in cultural differences between Chinese and

Printing, the compa, gunpowder and papermaking are the four great inventions of ancient China.They are signs of Chinese ancient civilization.In Beijing’s opening ceremony, people can see the Four Great Inventions in many programs, which have had significant impact in people's daily lives.At the beginning of the ceremony, colorful fireworks bloomed sequentially along Beijing's north-south axis, which showing the symbol of the 29th Olympic Games by 29 huge footprints.The Four Great Inventions are magically showed to people with music(Pacific Heritage tone).Though a short video, the ceremony shows the papermaking to the world.Next, is about “prints”.In the performance, the prints are like a modern computer keyboards which are ups and downs.Compa appeared in the “Silk Road” program, the actors waved compa like to show people the direction.During the London Olympic Opening Ceremony, it is a symbol of the United Kingdom turn into the Industrial Revolution when the bucolic replaced by the tall chimneys.At this moment, the artists are dreed as the reapers, mine workers, steel workers and engineers showing the real Britain where the workshop of the world is.At this stage, there are a lot of inventions which have affected our lives until today, including toilet, flat-screen printing.(Chimneys appeared in the early 18th centuries, and many child laborers’ first job was to clean the chimney.1820, the tallest chimney was built in Northern Ireland which is 138 meters tall, but later more and more chimneys taller than that one.)At the ceremony scene, the music goes to climaxes, and coming and its influence is significant.At the scene, it is full of smoke with six chimneys which may show people an industrialized typical picture.The Industrial Revolution brought great changes to the quiet rural life.The Industrial Revolution changed the world, and has far-reaching impacts on the world.3.1.2.The Silk Road and the River Culture The ancient Silk Road can be claified into the Sea Road and Overland Silk Road.Silk Road is an important economic and cultural channel between the East and the West.Because of the Road, Chinese culture has become world-famous and brought lot of Western culture to China.2000 years ago, Chinese caravan with precious silk, started their trip from Chang'an(now Xi'an), paed the Hexi Corridor, and arrived Central Asia, West Asia, and linked the Mediterranean countries.During the performance, the “Marine Silk Road“ put on the stage, which is a marine traffic route between China and the rest of the world.In those days, Zheng He went to western countries by the road.The performance called ”Silk Road“ showing the friendship between ancient China and other friendly country.They make friends to each other, learn from each other and help each other.People could see: after the calm, the long scrolls appear the Chinese specialty-porcelain and tea.Because of the large ceramic exports, Maritime Silk Road also known as the Ceramic Road on the sea.The huge paddles seem to be bringing audience thoughts from a variety of popular inland into an oasis.And the paddles connected with the ancient navigators’ image.The Maritime Silk Road was the traffic trade and cultural exchanges sea lanes between ancient China and foreign.At this moment, the stadium appears the Monstrous waves on the scroll.The paddles paddle paddler in the storm, and Wrestle with the rapids, which reflecting the courage and wisdom of Chinese people to challenge the natural.Slowly, the scroll turns into a boundle desert and Dunhuang dancers in the desert leading people to begin a friendship journey.Eyes turn to London.In the beginning of London’s Opening Ceremony, people could see the Big Ben, the London Eye, Tower Bridge, the Olympic Park and London bowl from west to east along the River Thames.At the same time people heard the Eton boating song and felt competing spirits that the sports delegation elite wanted to show.Thames plays a very important role in Britain history----She is the mother river in UK.Compared with other major rivers on the planet, she is not longest, but the place she flows is the cultural eence of British.In other words, Thames nurtured the brilliant civilization of Britain.And London's main buildings are mostly located on both sides of the River Thames, especially those old buildings and statues which has a hundred years, or even three to four hundred years’ history.Such as, the statue of Nelson naval commander in chief, the Westminster church, St.Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London, and London Bridge.These buildings through the viciitudes of life even the baptism from World War II, but they remained the inherent appearance, until today still used by people.Just like Britain politician John Burns said: “The Thames is the most beautiful rivers in the world, because it is a flow of history.” Thames’ estuary is full of merchant ships, however, the upper reaches of the river is known as its static.The Silk Road and the River Thames are not what we think of them.They are symbols of culture and heritage.They are a carrier of culture, which gave birth to the citizen.The two opening ceremonies put this kind of culture carriers onto the big screen, and show the cultural origins of the two countries.Admittedly, they have to bring a lot of benefits on material and financial, but their inherent cultural value would be a gem.3.2.Modern Demeanors Green Olympics, Humanities Olympics and Technology Olympics are the three concepts of the Beijing Olympic Games.Firstly Green Olympics’ connotation is a concept of sustainable development that is to protect the environment, conserve resources, and protect the ecological balance.This concept guides the construction of the Olympic Games, market development, procurement, logistics, accommodation, catering and large-scale activities, as a result to reduce negative impact from environmental and ecosystem.Secondly, Humanistic Olympics has two sides.On the one hand, it refers to the ideal concept of ”human nature“ and the ideal ”person“, and it emphasizes a people-oriented values.On the other hand, it means the cultural education.It was generally admitted by most people that the People with culture.Thirdly, the eence of the Olympics of technology is technological innovation.The modern science and technology infuse into the Olympic Games with multi-angle and multi-channel ways.In order to improve the environmental quality and build livable cities, relevant staff took the environmental protection as a primary condition.Meanwhile the Opening Ceremony was integrated the latest scientific and technological progre which were from home and abroad.So the Beijing’s Opening Ceremony has become a showcase that showed the new technological achievements.At the same time, Beijing Olympic Games dieminated the Modern Olympic Idea, and showed the splendid Chinese culture.The Opening Ceremony stuck out the idea of ”people-oriented“ and strived to build the natural and human environment of the Olympic Games participants satisfied.Clearly, green, humanities and technology were reflected in the London Olympics opening ceremony, but it integrated into British characteristics.The London’s Opening Ceremony wanted to tell the people it was a distinct cultural festival which was quite different from Beijing’s Opening Ceremony.Many scientists devoted themselves to London Olympics.They took the “sustainable use” as guiding ideology to build the Olympic venues.After London Olympic, the building materials were reused to other place.And for the place where not been removed, they would be held some world’s top concert and sports venues.3.3 Planning for the Future “Future”, what a wonderful word it is!A person are the future of a country.Any country would concern about the child's growth and education.In two opening ceremonies, they took their children into account.The opening ceremony in Beijing did not make the children as an integral part in the performance;inside of putting child in different programs which emphasized the kids are important for nation.For example: the pianist Lang Lang and Li Muzi who is a 5-year-old little girl played the piano.It means the happy and harmonious life of the 21st century;Zhu Qiao Yan, a 9-year-old little girl, put the kite in Bird’s Nest.It could be a metaphor for ”Green Olympics“.Another one is a 9-year-old girl Lin Miaoke, she sings ”Ode to the Motherland“ with slow rhythm, and 56 children who dreed in traditional ethnic clothing who lift the Chinese flag entered the hall, and then hand to the People's Liberation Army.These would be a metaphor for the 56 ethnic groups constitute a big family in a nation.London Olympics opening ceremony turned into a fairy tale kingdom and it’s also the children’s world.The children are one of the themes in chapter ”Never-land road”.With children’s fair-sounding songs, the center of the field is enveloped achievements are not only showed a country's past efforts, but also is the direction of the future development.The Olympic Games is a platform which showing all these to the world.The Director of 29th OCOG(Organizing Committee of Olympic Games)Marin has said: “Simply say, High-tech Olympics has three connotations;they are organization by using scientific spirit, support by using advanced technology, and the whole society can benefit from the results.“ Though blending Olympic spirit with science and technology, Beijing Olympic dieminate the scientific knowledge.High-tech Olympics is mainly reflected in three aspects.First, using the science and technology to improve the urban construction development.The second is to organize a series of exhibitions, which can promote the application of advanced and reliable products.Third the Olympic specific building needs to organize the new technology research and technology demonstration.It was only a short period that Beijing’s Olympic concluded.What’s the advanced technology has in London’s Ceremony comparing with Beijing’s? Since ancient times, Chinese people have taken the ”Hermanson“ and ”The theory that man is an integral part of nature“ as the ideals and pursuit.4.1.1 Affinity, human nature and inclusivene were blended well The ceremony has given China such a platform and opportunity showing the historical treasure to the world.People are not only can see the long history of China, but also can feel the affinity, humanized and inclusive in the entire ceremony.In order to implement the inclusive, China must be “open-the door” to learn new things.At that moment, the OCOG debriefed and adopted many opinions from different people to guide the ceremony.In the past, Chinese were used to being solemn and impaioned in momentous occasion.But this time, things are quite different from before.The director created a calm and mild atmosphere.From the beginning, the flag enter the field while a little girl is singing the March of the Volunteers with a lyrical tone.The director changes the march into the songs whose tone is lyrical.People can see many other things to show the changes.Such as, the theme song, the pro-ballad, and the smile at the end of the ceremony.All in all, there are many details to tell the people that Chinese people are full of kind and broad mind.It’s just like the theme song “you and me, we are family.”
