Through an old fisherman‟s struggle against nature, Ernest Hemingway portrays the most magnificent part of the culture of manhood, courage and bravery。

If you want to understand what the novel trying to convey to us,you‟d better know some information of Ernest Hemingway and the archetype of Santiago-Gregorio Fuentes and the great friendship between them。

Ernest Hemingway, as one of the greatest literary lights of the 20th century, did more to change the style of English literature than any other writer in the same period. As an unique writer, he wrote in short and declarative sentences, and despite the fact that his works were usually marked by incredible economy of words and descriptions, he was always able to seize the very core of the soul of his characters and present them to the readers in a simple but extremely powerful way.Ernest Hemingway covered both the Spanish civil war and World War I.He subsequently portrays his own experiences in these two wars in his brilliant novels, For Whom the Bell Tolls and A Farewell to Arms.Although these two books immediately established his status in the literary world, it is his timele novella, the Old Man and the Sea, that eventually help him win the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize for literature in1954.Gregorio Fuentes was born in Canary Islands in1897,his father was a cook on a cargo boat and died of an accident when Fuentes wan still a young boy.Fuentes opted to become a seaman, in honor of his father before him.Although his adoptive father, Don Raul Mediavilla, initially disapproved, he soon taught the young but intensely focused Fuentes the ways of the sea. With his natural skills at seamanship, Fuentes joined a cargo sailing company in Cuba.Fuentes' first encounter with the young literary giant began as a misfortune that became the adventure of his life. The 25-year-old Fuentes, captain of a fishing veel that regularly traversed the Florida straits between Cuba and the U.S.mainland, was returning from Cuba when he encountered a stranded boat, out of fuel, several nautical miles off the Florida coast. When the occupant of the boat(Hemingway)cried out for help in Spanish, Fuentes came to the rescue.Fuentes towed Hemingway and his boat to the U.S.Dry Tortugas, due west of the Keys. From there Hemingway phoned officials in Key West, his original destination, for further help.As Hemingway departed, the last thing he said to his young Cuban rescuer was “Goodbye, my friend.I'll see you again in Cuba.” Several years after their first encounter, Hemingway's prophecy proved true.Fuentes was then working on a ship owned by the University of Maachusetts.A friend introduced him to Ernest Hemingway and when they met at a cafe they both experienced a jolt of instant recognition.Hemingway offered Fuentes the job as captain of his fishing yacht since he was such a talented helmsman.Without a second thought, Fuentes said yes, and their enduring friendship was forged.Hemingway and his buddy Fuentes continued to fish seriously between Cuba, Key West and the Bahamas, while he was collecting material for what would become his most famous piece of angling literature. The Old Man and the Sea is a triumphal document of mans' struggle over adversity. The claic novel, written in 1952, tells the tale of an old Cuban fisherman's immense battle to catch the perfect fish. The book's climax painfully details an arduous three-day contest with a marlin that he has hooked but eventually loses to sharks. The physical suffering he endures is portrayed as a spiritual triumph of mans' communion with the natural world.“I was with Hemingway when he got the idea for The Old Man and the Sea,” Fuentes recalled in an interview.“Upon hearing of the death of Ernest Hemingway, I vowed never to fish again, and I haven't,” Fuentes said.“Although many people have asked me over the years, I swore that when Mr.Hemingway died I would never fish upon another yacht.I took Pilar to my house so I wouldn't have any responsibility with anybody again.I knew that I could never have a closer friend than Mr.Hemingway, so I decided never to sail again.” Fuentes was considered a national treasure in Cuba(followers have filled countle guest books in his home). But he never dwelt on the controversies that swirled around his immortal friend,Rather, he modestly commented when asked how he feels about The Old Man and the Sea, which had brought such fame to him:“I didn't need to read his books,” he said.“I knew the man himself.I was there and lived it all with him.” Now we come back to the book,Taking place entirely in the sea, the Old Man and the Sea follows the unbelievable adventure of an old fisherman called Santiago, who is tormented by weeks of hunger and constant bad luck.Santiago is once one of the greatest fishermen in his village, but because of his failing abilities and bad luck, he has gone 84 days without catching a fish.In order to regain his confidence and honor, the old man finally decides to sail far out in the sea in search of a catch that can help him rebuild the courage he used to have.In this journey, his luck returns, and he meets one of the greatest marlin he has ever seen in his life. After three days of struggles against the fish and himself, the old man eventually defeats the great marlin. However, on his way back to the village, he is again attacked by a herd of sharks, and he is forced to sacrifice his prize.Weary and wounded, the old man returned to the village with the giant skeletons of the fish and immediately falls into a sleep. In his dream, he once again sees the lions at play at the beach of Africa, which is a scene he saw when he was still young and strong.Like most of Hemingway‟s literary works, the Old Man and the Sea is told in a language of great simplicity and power. With an enchanting and captivating tone, the author vividly depicted the story about a typical fisherman‟s struggle against fate, nature and his own limitations.Probably one of the most important features of the story is that it very well combines the changes of natural environment with the development of the plot, and the author very well utilizes literary techniques, such as contrast and juxtaposition, to link different elements together.Besides this, the story itself is also narrated in an extremely reasonable and believable way;the author arranges the story considerably logically way, and he adds multiple conflicts, such as the battle with the shark and the marlin, to help maintain the reader‟s emotional level and to further develop the story. In addition to the development of the plot and the story structure, the author also attached great importance to the development of the protagonist‟s characters;he delicately portrayed the main character‟s actions, and he was much emphasized on depicting his mental activities. And these eventually helps he succefully creates Santiago‟s heroic figures and elevates his character to a legendary status.I„ve read this novel for more than 5 times,And because of its simple language and sincere emotions, I would always been touched so deeply when I read it。I show respect to the old man„s bravene,it also made me think about what a real man should be when he faces so mush difficulties.Undoubtedly, from both the standpoints of its literary value and its exploration of the value of humanity,The Old Man and Sea is a book that worth us to read.
