A young man, Holden Caulfield, is in a mental institution where he is recovering from a recent mental breakdown.The entire novel is a flashback of the events that had led up to his emotional destruction.The flashback begins with Holden leaving the boarding school he had been attending because of lackluster grades.He knows that he cannot return to his parents so he spends the next three days wandering aimlely around New York City.He stays at a cheap hotel for one night, goes to two night clubs, dances with older women, often talks and thinks about sex, even has a prostitute come up to his room.The next day, he talks with some nuns about literature and has a date with his former girlfriend Sally Woodruff.They go to the theater and also go ice-skating.When he asks her to run away with him, she gets mad and they part.He is “depreed,” at this time Holden thinks and even talks to his deceased brother Allie.To Holden, Allie represented innocence.With nobody else around, Holden turns to the only person he can relate to, his sister Phoebe.He sneaks into his parent's apartment at night to talk to his sister.He tells her about his dream to be a “catcher in the rye,” and that he wants to run away.He then leaves to meet his former teacher, Mr.Antolini.They have a good talk, but Holden leaves in a hurry when he thinks his host makes a sexual advance on him.He spends the night in a train station, then runs around town.Finally, he meets his sister, who tells him she wants to run away with him and that she will never go back to school.Holden sees himself in her, finally changes his mind and decides to go back to his parents.In the final chapter, Holden is at the sanitarium in California.He doesn't want to tell us any more.In fact, the whole story has only made him mi people, even the jerks.5.Your point of view about one of the characters or about the author:
The narrator, Holden, is telling us that he had a lousy childhood, school didn't work out well for him, how he hate those phonies , how he loved his Phoebe and Allie, and that he had always dreamt of being a catcher in the rye.Holden is just a typical teenager of his age.Sometimes he is timid..He is timid for love.He had been reminding himself to give Jane a buzz through the whole book but never did ,by the excuse“ he is not in the right mood”.But he is also brave.he is brave to expre his own ideas instead of being a phony.He is brave to live by himself away from parents' care.He is brave to dream of being a catcher in the rye to rescue carele children.He is also a guy with deep emotions.He loved his sisters and brothers so much that he said：“i know he's dead!Don’t you think i know that? i can still like him, though, can't I? Just because somebody's dead you don't just stop liking them……”, which touched me so much.And in the last but one chapter, he was watching Phoebe playing on the carrousel in the rain, being so damn happy.Holden does not follow the usual pattern.He begins in turmoil, struggles in turmoil, has a moment of clarity watching Phoebe at the carrousel, but eventually suffers physical and
emotional collapse.Holden does change toward the end of the book.Children must do this, and adults must let them.For better or worse, Holden is beginning to grow up;but he is far from any kind of triumph.He will go home and soon collapse, resulting in his stay at the sanitarium in California.We cannot know how he will be in the future.Salinger does not spoon-feed the reader a “happy” ending.In that way, the novel is more realistic, more lifelike and authentic than some representatives of the genre.Everyone has to grow up.It is an inevitable fact.Holden cannot grasp this concept and therefore has a nervous breakdown.We must deal with the ways of our society in order not to seclude ourselves from it.6.Beautiful Phrases or Sentences（at least 10）：

Then, all of a sudden, I started to cry.I couldn't help it.I did it so nobody could hear me, but I did it.It scared hell out of old Phoebe when I started doing it, and she came over and tried to make me stop, but once you get started, you can't just stop on a goddam dime.I was still sitting on the edge of the bed when I did it, and she put her old arm around my neck, and I put my arm around her, too, but I still couldn't stop for a long time.I thought I was going to choke to death or something.Boy, I scared hell out of poor old Phoebe.The damn window was open and everything, and I could feel her shivering and all, because all she had on was her pajamas.I tried to make her get back in bed, but she wouldn't go.Finally I stopped.But it certainly took me a long, long time.
