第一则： First One: 1954年10月2日 October 2, 1954 聪，亲爱的孩子。My Dear Son Cong: 收到9月22日晚发的第六信，很高兴。
We are pleased to have received your sixth letter dated September 22.我们并没为你前信感到什么烦恼或是不安。
However, we do not feel disturbed or worried because of what you wrote in your previous letter.我在第八封信中还对你预告，这种精神消沉的情形，以后还是会有的。
In my eighth letter, I forewarned you that these bouts of depreion would happen again in the future.我是过来人，决不至于大惊小怪。
I’ve been there, and so I am not at all surprised that happened.你也不必为此担心，Also you shouldn’t worry about it.更不必硬压在肚里不告诉我们。
More so, you shouldn’t hold it inside you and don’t tell us about it.心中的苦闷不在家信中发泄，又哪里去发泄呢？
If you can’t air your lonesomene in a family letter, where else can you let itall out? 孩子不向父母诉苦向谁诉呢？
To whom coulda child vent his grief other than to his parents? 我们不来安慰你，又该谁来安慰你呢？
We don’t come along to console you, who shouldcomfort you instead? 人一辈子都在高潮——低潮中浮沉，During our lifetime, our moods go up and down like a yo-yo.惟有庸碌的人，生活才如死水一般；
Only lives of mundane people stay flat like still water.或者要有极高的修养，方能廓然无累，真正的解脱。
Alternatively, well-seasoned people stay tranquil and relaxed without real concerns.只要高潮不过分使你紧张，低潮不过分使你颓废，就好了。
It is fine so long as emotion highs do not stre you out and emotional lows do not drain you.太阳太强烈，会把五谷晒焦；雨水太猛，也会淹死庄稼。
Overly scorching sun would fry grain-plants and exceively inundating rain would drown farm-crops.我们只求心理相当平衡，不至于受伤而已。We won’t get hurt so long as our moods stay stable.你也不是栽了筋斗爬不起来的人。
You are not the type who tumbles and can’t pick yourself back up again.我预料国外这几年，对你整个的人也有很大的帮助。
I expect your experience during these few years overseas has been a great help to your development as a person.这次来信所说的痛苦，我都理会得；我很同情，I understand and sympathize with your pains that are mentioned in your letter.我愿意尽量安慰你、鼓励你。
You can count on my consolation and encouragement to the greatest degree poible.克利斯朵夫不是经过多少回这种情形吗？
Didn’t Jean-Christophe go through similar situations many times as well? 他不是一切艺术家的缩影与结晶吗？
Wasn’t he the epitome and manifestation of all artists? 慢慢的你会养成另外一种心情对付过去的事：
Slowly you will develop a different state of mind to handle matters similar to those situations in the past.就是能够想到而不再惊心动魄，That is, you will be able to anticipate things in happening and will not be taken by surprise again.能够从客观的立场分析前因后果，You will be able to analyse causes and consequences of events objectively.做将来的借鉴，以免重蹈覆辙。
Then you can use them for future referencesto prevent making similar mistakes again.一个人惟有敢于正视现实，正视错误，A person needs to have the courage to confront reality and past mistakes.用理智分析，彻底感悟，As such, he can come up with sensible analysis and in-depth appreciation.才不至于被回忆侵蚀。
Only then he won’t be weighed down by bad memories.我相信你逐渐会学会这一套，越来越坚强的。
I believe in time you will learn this approach and get tougher.我以前在信中和你提过感情的ruin〔创伤，覆灭〕，就是要你把这些事当做心灵的灰烬看，Previously in my letter I mentioned to you about how to handle sentimental ruins, and that is to look at those experiences as foregone mental ashes.看的时候当然不免感触万端，Of course when you look, you can’t help but feel poignant about them.但不要刻骨铭心地伤害自己，而要像对着古战场一般的存着凭吊的心怀。
But you must not let them get to you in a big way, but to face them with an indifferent mindset as if you were reminiscing ruins from ancient battlefields.倘若你认为这些话是对的，对你有些启发作用，If you concur with I’m saying here, these words would be enlightening to you.那么将来在遇到因回忆而痛苦的时候（那一定免不了会再来的），拿出这封信来重读几遍。In the future when you are feel pains from memory of past experiences(which inevitably will come again), please take this letter out and read it over several times.第二则： Second One: 1955年1月26日 January 26, 1955 早预算新年中必可接到你的信，我们都当作等待什么礼物一般的等着。
We expected some time ago we would receive your letter during New Year, and we looked forward to it as if it was a special gift.果然昨天早上收到你来信，而且是多少可喜的消息。
As it turned out we received your letter yesterday morning, and Son, it was somewhat of good news to us.孩子!要是我们在会场上，一定会禁不住涕泗横流的。

Son, you are enjoying a gratifying life andGod has provided you with favorable treatments.我更高兴的更安慰的是：多少过分的谀词与夸奖，都没有使你丧失自知之明，What pleases and comforts me the most is flatteries and accolades have not destroyed the self-realization of who you really are.众人的掌声、拥抱，名流的赞美，都没有减少你对艺术的谦卑!In spite of applause, embraces, and celebrities’ praises, you have maintained your modesty toward art.总算我的教育没有白费，你二十年的折磨没有白受!All my teachings given to you and your struggles for twenty years have not gone to waste.你能坚强(不为胜利冲昏了头脑是坚强的最好的证据)，You have mental toughne, as evidenced by your ability not to lose your own identity in the face of victory.只要你能坚强，我就一辈子放了心!As long as you stay tough, I have nothing to worry about you in my lifetime.成就的大小、高低，是不在我们掌握之内的，The degree of succe is not completely under our control.一半靠人力，一半靠天赋，It’s half through personal efforts and half through destiny.但只要坚强，就不怕失败，不怕挫折，不怕打击——不管是人事上的，生活上的，技术上的，学习上的——打击；
But so long as you stay tough, you can weather failures, blunders and heavy-blows—whethersuch blows stem from interpersonal, livelihood-related, technical or academic matters.从此以后你可以孤军奋斗了。
From now on you can solider on by yourself.何况事实上有多少良师益友在周围帮助你，扶掖你。

Infant does not know he is alone.赤子孤独了，会创造一个世界，创造许多心灵的朋友!An isolated infant creates a unique world of his own and shares it spiritually with many companions in a similar state of minds.永远保持赤子之心，到老也不会落伍，By maintaining an infant’s untainted mind, you’ll never feel antiquated even when you get old.永远能够与普天下的赤子之心相接相契相抱!Also you will always aociate with and embrace similar untainted minds all over the world.你那位朋友说得不错，艺术表现的动人，一定是从心灵的纯洁来的!Your friend is correct in saying the ability to reach out and move others in art must come from pure mind.不是纯洁到像明镜一般，怎能体会到前人的心灵?怎能打动听众的心灵? Unle the degree of purity thus attained resembles a mirror, how else could you appreciate the spirit of predeceors and touch the souls of audiences?

The Dean of Music Academy says your performance is fluid like water and stream, which makes me think of a parallel to Jean-Christophe.天舅舅说你小时候常以克利斯朵夫自命，而你的个性居然和罗曼·罗兰的理想有些相像了。

……黄河之水天上来，奔流到海不复回！
The water of Yangtze River, seemingly coming from heaven, will never return once it is emptied into the sea.……无边落木萧萧下，不尽长江滚滚来！……
A claic poem states: “Leaves are falling off vast foliage-shedding woodland and water is flowing out from inexhaustible Yangtze River.”
有这种诗人灵魂的传统的民族，应该有气吞牛斗的表现才对。
A nation with poets of such vitality in tradition ought to have sky-high performance.你说常在矛盾与快乐之中，You always say you live amidst dilemmas and happine.但我相信艺术家没有矛盾不会进步，不会演变，不会深入。
I believe without dilemmas, an artist would not be able to improve, evolve and drill deeper for knowledge.有矛盾正是生机蓬勃的明证。
Dilemmas are proof that varieties of vitality jostle to boom.眼前你感到的还不过是技巧与理想的矛盾，The dilemmas which you feel in front of you only pertain to conflicts between techniques and ideals.将来你还有反复不已更大的矛盾呢：
In the future, there will be more serious and recurring dilemmas.形式与内容的枘凿，自己内心的许许多多不可预料的矛盾，都在前途等着你。
Those include conflicts between form and substance, and unexpected psychological self-contradictions, all of which await you ahead.别担心，But don’t worry.解决一个矛盾，便是前进一步!Every time you resolve one dilemma, you have progreed one step forward.矛盾是解决不完的，Dilemmas can never be finished in resolving.所以艺术没有止境，没有perfect[完美，十全十美]的一天，人生也没有perfect的一天!Therefore art has no limit and can never be perfected, just like life can never be perfectone day.唯其如此，才需要我们日以继夜，终生的追求、苦练；
It’s only because of that we need to pursue and practice hard day after night all our lives.要不然大家做了羲皇上人，垂手而天下治，做人也太腻了!Otherwise wouldn’t it be boring if everything comes easy without lifting a finger just likethe ways emperors in the Xi Huang era ruled?-
