The American Dream is My Top Concern Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
It is great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful Tuesday afternoon to share my ideas with you.Today, my topic is the American dream is my top concern. The American dream of mine means that in the next 3 years I will put every piece of my effort to get an acce to studying abroad in America.I come to figure that the more I learn about America, the more attractive the American culture seems to be.Today I would like to pick up 3 points to explain why I’m falling love with American culture.No.1 is about the time.“We are slaves to nothing but the clock,” it has been said in America.Time is treated as it were something almost real. They budget it, save it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for it;they also charge for it.It is a precious resource. Many people have a rather acute sense of the shortne of each lifetime, and it is generally accepted that one’s life is as puny as a grain of sand against the universe. So they work hard and play hard, hoping that they could get every minute to count. And Americans believe no one stands still. If you are not moving ahead, you are falling behind. This attitude results in a nation of people committed to researching, experimenting and exploring.Being supported with the beliefs
above, Americans especially treasure their life, their time, and anything they are doing, cause they understand that once the sands have run out of a people’s hourgla, they can never be replaced again.No.2 refers to the confidence in an American way.Americans’ trust of themselves also leave me a never-forget impreion.I still remembered the movie I watched in an early age.Pursued by a group of frightful enemies, Trinity—the heroine—was almost besieged. Then she happen to find a flash of hope—a window. But there is still distance long enough for her to be discovered and shot. However, though drained and exhausted, Trinity make up all her mind to run to the window with all of the energy left in her soul and without any hesitation, ignoring the high risk that she might be easily found and the killed bullet goes faster than her. Finally, like every hero in American movies, she made wonders happened.Trinity’s deep trust of herself really affects my little heart a lot.Since then, a funny story is, when I was playing a game called “捉迷藏” as the running player, I would seize the moment, take a breath, and run, no caring about what will happen next, just run.The feeling that there is nothing in the world any more but the destination ahead still makes me very excited today. Results
always comes to be, fortunately but certainly, that I would win the game at the last second, maybe, right at the second the finding player was just turning his body to me.No.3 relates to being honest and open.It seems a natural character for Americans to be simple, be themselves and be open. They hardly tell a lie, they do what they want, and they see the truth of things more important that any other things.A simple saying is always kept in their mind: “Life is like a field of newly fallen snow.Where I choose to walk every step will show.” So I just thought why not learn something from Americans.Be honest and open about who you really are.People who lack genuine core values rely on external factors—their looks or statues—in order to feel good about themselves.Inevitably they will do everything they can to preserve this false mask, but they will do very little to enhance their inner value and personal growth. So be yourself.Don’t engage in a personal cover-up of areas that are unpleasing in your life.“Tough times never last but tough people do,” says Robert Schuller. In other words, face reality and be mature in your responses to life’s challenges.Self-respect and a clear conscience are powerful components of integrity and are the basis for enriching your
relationships with others.Integrity means you do what you do because it’s not just fashionable or politically correct.A life of principle, of not yielding to the tempting attractions of an easy morality, will always win the day.All these beliefs mentioned, I think, make up the mainstay of the American spirit and also make up the attraction for me to be part of them.Personally, I’m willing to say, American culture is to me is some kind of what water is to fish.On the way getting to my water, I need to answer a question “How can I get my dream come true?” well, I prefer actions than words. Before the actions, I do have had a schedule.Such things as making the aim clear at the meantime giving up some other opportunities, like serving the students’ union or making a girlfriend, and focusing more attention on the exam I need to pa like GRE or TOELF or something, and being active to learn more about American culture through movies, television programs, websites, and whatever I can get, I’m ready to work hard and accomplish them. But the most vital thing, the strongest backing and what I’m proud of myself is such a kind of power of struggling.Disgustingly, I wasted six of the seven days’ vacation, in which, I planned 3 days for the preparation for this competition. You cannot imagine how disappointed I feel to myself.I hated
myself to be some kind of usele;I was scared that if there is no longer enough time;I was so depreed and even got a thought of giving up.But just 1 second after I got this devil thought, a strong voice occurred to my inner heart “No, it can never happens” I turned out to find I even didn’t have enough courage to say: “I’m a quitter.” There had been certainly many difficult times for me, but every time no matter how bad the situation had become, I would firmly believe: there is always a way out;there is still a piece of hope that I can make a difference. This belief creates unbelievable power, power of struggling, power of struggling for my dream. It let me make the choice, quietly but strongly, “Even if I can’t make my dreams come true, I will never give it up.” It let me forget all the sadne and pull myself together;forget everything and restart. It saves me every time after I was almost destroyed by the difficulties.“Never give up and restart!” I shouted in my heart. So, finally, I get the chance to be still standing here. That is not over, I promise to myself before coming up, “If there is an opportunity, I will catch it without hesitation;if there isn’t an opportunity, I will struggle for one.” Just as I am a dark horse in the first round, I hope, I can be the dark horse to the end.Thank you very much.
